Nominated for best foreign language film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes, this magical film went on to win that title at the BAFTAs. It makes clever use of the many layers to the Carmen story, originally a novel by Prosper Merimee, best known as the opera by Bizet. Antonio, a middle-aged choreographer, falls in love with the woman he chooses to play sexy Carmen in Bizet’s opera. Carmen is wild and untameable, despite Antonio’s trying to mould her as he wants her, pushing her hard and making great physical demands of her – shades of Pygmalion here?

The film straddles reality and fantasy – how much of what we see is reality? how much is Antonio’s reverie? – the clash between the two women, Cristina (the leading dancer in Antonio’s troupe, passed over for Carmen) and Carmen? or the habanera scene? The best scene of all in this remarkable film is the poker scene straddling reality and fantasy, dance and dialogue.
There have been some 50 adaptations of the story and the opera to the screen, and they all have in common the tragic end, inevitable, of course – how often do we destroy what we create and what we love? But this film is unique – the most sensual of them all and the most Spanish, truly representative of all that is Carmen.
