Room 144

The Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University and Think:Kids are proud to offer an intensive training workshop in the Collaborative Problem Solving approach. Presented by Erik J. Kola, RN, and co-trainer, this 2-1/2 day intensive training is intended for mental health clinicians, educators, and parents who have some prior exposure but are interested in becoming more proficient in this innovative and evidence-based approach to understanding and helping children and adolescents with behavioral challenges. This training qualifies toward Think:Kids’ professional certification.

OUTCOMES OF TRAINING

Partipants will receive in-depth training in both the assessment and intervention components of the model by:

  • Gaining an understanding of the philosophical tenets of the approach

  • Learning that low frustration tolerance and the inability to be flexible is a learning disability

  • Understanding the cognitive factors that contribute to aggressive outbursts or implosive behaviors (lagging skills)

  • Practicing identifying the cognitive skill deficits that contribute to challenging behaviors

  • Learning about the three ways to handle unmet adult expectations (Plans A, B and C)

  • Developing skills in the implementation of Plan B: solving problems collaboratively through role modeling and guided practice

  • Using Plan B with a classroom or group

  • Networking with other professionals

  • Completion of this training is a pre-requisite for Tier 2 training
