Customs Letter:

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

This young person has Type 1 Diabetes and requires insulin replacement therapy. For this purpose they wear an insulin pump. The family will be travelling with spare equipment for the pump and needles and a pen device, which will be used in emergency situations.

The insulin pump should not be put on the conveyor belt for hand luggage, be scanned by any hand held scanner or pass through whole body scanners at airports. However, the pump can go through the airport security metal detector and be swabbed (for explosives).

In addition, they will need to carry equipment in their hand luggage that will enable them to monitor the blood glucose concentration through out the duration of the flight. The family will need to carry with them treatment for hypoglycaemia which may be in the form of sugary drinks.

I trust this letter will facilitate the family’s safe passage through customs.
Yours Sincerely,

Professor Peter Hindmarsh

Professor in Paediatric Endocrinology
