CV medverkande Nordiska länder - VARIA2011
Erikk Mckenzie dans/musik (NO) - (coordinator of and part of VARIA2011 group 1)

Erikk McKenzie studied fine art and dance in Norway before moving to Amsterdam, receiving bachelor degree in dance and choreography from School for New Dance Development in 2008. Currently working as a musician, video artist, choreographer and performer, his interest lies naturally in the crossing of disciplines and in the process of collaboration. He finds inspiration in the change of context – between cultures, between fields of specialization, looking for new reference points for perception. In these experiences he finds a base for the continuation of his work; through the use and recycling of sound, image and choreographic material. Innovation, fusion and soul are key elements in his artistic source. His diverse experience with media allows him flexibility in selecting a suitable form for each individual proposal. His music has been published through koept.net and plasticstrip.no and his compositions have toured internationally with various companies. His videos have been screened in Spain ( MONO, Convent Saint Augusti, IDN ), Hungary ( Edit2007 ), Norway ( Tou Scene, Nordlys ), Holland ( Badhuis Theater, Julidans ). His choreographies have been performed in Norway ( Tou Scene ), Spain ( IN ), Uruguay (Sitiada ) and Hungary ( L1 ). Erikk medverkade i VARIA2007 och VARIA2009 samt är en av medlemmarna i det nya Nordiska nätverket NORIA (NORdic Improvisation Art).

Stian Skagen music (NO) – (Part of VARIA2011 group 1)

S Skagen is an artist working on the borderline of philosophy, physics and science. By combining sound

and philosophy with contemporary science and digital developments, Skagen produces a complex ambience

where the borders of the perceptual experience are challenged. Whether it is in his sound performance projects, installations or texts, the common factor is time, space and systems reflecting and shaping our environ-

ment and the surroundings that build up our reality. In sound performance projects and audio storage Skagen works with an analogue and digital environment, generative software Reaktor, MAX/MSP enables Skagen to combine and construct custom tools to generate sound and visuals in realtime processes, where he is searching to find new sonic expressions and complex sound structures. In 2003 he constituted Ryfylke with Sten Ove Toft. Ryfylke is now one of Norways leading experimental sound duos and have established themselves on the national and international scene for electronic music. Skagen is inspired by the conceptual art of the 60’s, where such as W. S. Burroughs, John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer,, “The art and language group” and Joseph Kosuth merged art and language into a solid form which challenged the structures of art, society and institution. Influenced by contemporary artists such as Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai, Skagen works under strict conditions, materials and concepts to give his ideas a system to work within. These systems might be a mathematical formula, a geometrical shape, a historical thesis or the theories of physics and philosophy. Skagen looks at his production as a continuous research, where his artistic practice evolves and take on new forms in different medias. By combining the different arenas such as art institutions, performance and audio. storage, Skagen gets the ability to show different sides of the same nature to a broader audience. In 2006 Skagen published his first book in the [concept.virus] series, where some of his work is elaborated on. For Skagen art is a complex structure of several equally valued positions and actions, thus he has worked as curator, producer and promoter for artists that represent a view and expression that stands out as coordinate points and polarities on the map of contemporary art. Skagen says; “I do not consider myself as a sound artist, sound art is specific and relates to sound as tradition. Sound has a quality which is not found in other media such as the visual arts and sculpture, I use this quality in my artistic production, not as an ornamental extra, it builds up the very essence of my work, and this essence may also appear as visual art and sculpture.” http://www.conceptvirus.org

Questioning the role of the artist leading to formal experimentation in performance practice, techniques, and concepts.
