Each time you speak during your imhÓtep
1) CONNECT the point (that you’re about to make) to something another panelist has already said. Specifically, name that student, remind everyone very briefly about a point that student made, and (also very briefly) explain the connection between that point & what you’re about to say.
2) before the quote, you need an introduction which explains, in detail, exactly what has been happening in the story leading up to that moment, who’s speaking, who’s listening (unless it’s narration), and how each of those characters is feeling.
3) After each quote, five things need to be explained, in your own words, extemporaneously (without reading from notes):
A) In simple plain English, exactly what the quoted words mean (if the meaning isn’t completely obvious),

B) Exactly how those words are truly an instance of internal conflict (or whatever literary element your group will be discussing),

C) An explanation of the implied theme (in a super-shortened version, if you’ve already explained this theme),

D) Exactly how you can tell that the author, by using the words you just quoted, really is implying that theme, and

E) What exactly makes you think – based on the quote(s) you just presented – that the author feels more strongly about this theme than about one (or more) of the themes being advocated, as important in the novel, by today’s other panelists.
