Part II. Overall Statement of Justification (Summary)

State the purpose of opening the program in Eastern Mediterranean University from an academic perspective. This part should be a concise summary of the information supplied in the remaining parts of this form and information supplied in the New Program Proposal - I.

(Fill in this part LAST)

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary program utilizing the application of engineering principles to the fields of biology and health care.  Eastern Mediterranean University has all the academic infrastructure that biomedical engineering requires. Engineering Faculty, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Medicine are offering almost all the courses that such a program would require. Most of the laboratories are already available. Therefore, the university collectively possesses the know-how required to run such a program.

The student demand to biomedical engineering is another factor to be considered before establishing a new program. Recent ranking status of this program in USA as well as elsewhere in the world is very high. The prospective salary and developing trends on the profession are also promising.

Part III. Program Features

Program Goals
State the overall purpose and the major goals of the program by providing a clear expose of the program’s teaching intentions, i.e., writing a brief statement of what the program intends to deliver, how the program will ensure educational effectiveness, identifying the core concepts and any rationale.

The Biomedical Engineering program goal is to create world-class graduates to meet the 21st century needs of biomedical-related industries focused on patient care via medical devices and pharmaceuticals, as well as government and private consulting practice – all founded on a strong science and engineering education. Graduates of the EMU Biomedical Engineering Program will:

  • Apply engineering principles to understand and predict the behavior of biological and physiological systems relevant to human health and disease.

  • Understand and apply the theory and practice of biomedical engineering design and technology creation tailored towards patient care and human health.

  • Engineer robust solutions within highly variable and complex biomedical problems.

  • Build critical leadership, interpersonal and professional skills to thrive within diverse team environments and prepare for life-long learning.

  • Be provided with opportunities for an experiential learning approach based on biomedical applications.

  • Have a complementary general education in humanities, history and social sciences.

Program Outcomes
List statements that describe what the students will gain or be able to do after completing the program. The outcomes should reflect what the students will have gained from their participation in the coursework and other experiences which the program provides.

Upon completion of the B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.

  2. Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

  3. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

  4. Function on multidisciplinary teams.

  5. Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.

  6. Understand professional and ethical responsibility.

  7. Communicate effectively.

  8. Obtain the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

  9. Recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning.

  10. Gain knowledge of contemporary issues.

  11. Use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Unique Features or Strengths of the Program
Identify the unique features or strengths of the program which will make it superior to similar programs in other institutions.

This program is developed in coordination with Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Departments as well as Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine. Biomedical Engineering is a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary program which provides a common platform for collaboration among engineering, natural and medical sciences. In this context, electrical, electronic, computer and mechanical engineers collaborate with biologists, medical doctors and pharmacists for healthier future of humanity.

Having all contributing programs available in Eastern Mediterranean University, it is an efficient and a feasible idea to establish such a program which would contribute to academic, research and service outputs of the university.

Specializations, Concentrations, Streams or Options within the program
Specify any specializations, concentrations, streams or options within the program.

Specializations, concentrations, streams or options within the program will be partially possible with 4 Area Elective Courses. Options will be developed through an evolutionary process in time after establishment of the program by consulting the needs of the constituents.

Statement of Originality (Duplication Check)
State clearly that the proposed program is not a major duplication of, or will not produce any substantial overlap with, any existing program(s) at the University. Include a brief discussion of differences of the proposed program from similar programs with minor overlap.

There is no duplication and/or substantial overlap with any other program in the University. Except, there is an associate degree program “Biomedical Equipment Technology Technician Program” which is conducted in Turkish that has some relevance. Dıfference between the two programs originates from the program outcomes where the Technician program focusses in practical skills and the proposed engineering program focusses on the use of science and theoretical knowledge in Biomedical Engineering.
