Purpose: Create a mobile to hang in the classroom that will display information about a chosen element.
Procedure:

  1. You are to research to find 20 different facts about your element).

Each of the following facts/drawings need to be included on your final project.

1. Your Element Name and Your name (Make this large and easy to read!)

2. element symbol

3. atomic number

4. atomic mass

5. number of proton/neutrons/electrons

6. drawing of Bohr model of electrons

7. Lewis dot drawing of valence electrons

8. Group number. Period number. (How we labeled our periodic table in class)

9. Group name (halogen, alkali metal, alkali earth metal, etc.)

10. Is it a metal, non metal, metalloid or noble gas.

11. Melting point and boiling point (oC)

12. physical state at room temperature (solid, liquid or gas)

13. density (g/cm3 or g/L)

14. common uses

For your 6 remaining facts you can choose what information you would like to include from the following options:



  • Health or safety issues associated with this element (exp. is it radioactive?)

  • Element’s compounds and their uses

  • Physical properties and appearance

  • Sources of the element

  • Date and location of discovery

  • Name of discoverer

  • Countries/places/planets where it is found

  • Other interesting/unique facts

2. Use your 20 facts to create a mobile about your element that can hang from the classroom ceiling.

Be sure that your element’s name is the focal point of the mobile.

Possible materials you could use to construct your mobile: wire hanger, embroidery hoop, fishing twine, yarn, string, construction paper/cardstock.

You are not limited to this list of materials. Let your creativity shine!

Rubric

40 points – Information for each of 20 facts is correct and complete. (2 points per fact)

10 points- Final product is a mobile that can hang from the classroom ceiling.

10 points- Project is visually appealing with drawings/clip art to enhance written facts.

Information is clear and legible.

5 points – Bibliography of all resources used for project. Submitted in MLA format. You must



use at least 2 resources. (see guidelines online)
Total project grade is out of 65 points.

For each day the project is late, 5% of your grade will automatically be deducted. The project will no longer be accepted after 5 days.
