  • 1817: foundation by Dutch king Willem I

  • 1830: Belgian independence:

  • UGent becomes a Belgian state university

  • language of instruction: French instead of Latin

  • 1882: first female student in Ghent

  • 1930: first Belgian university, language of instruction: Dutch

  • Post-war: democratisation of higher education

  • 1991: UGent becomes an autonomous institution

  • Open University: Study Centre - UGent coordinates the Flemish Study Centre that is part of the Open University of The Netherlands

  • Distance Learning, e-Learning and Life Long Learning: students can follow distance education on academic level, with conventional textbooks and electronic support.

  • Education Reform: modernization of the faculties: stimulate and follow up

Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders (FWO) (5/6)

  • Foreign postdoctoral fellows: to introduce external expertise at Flemish universities

  • Junior postdoctoral fellowships

  • Monthly allowance of 1 500 €

  • Senior postdoctoral fellowships

  • For fellows who have already taken a doctoral degree between 5 and 10 years ago

  • Monthly allowance of 2 000 €

  • Duration: minimum 3 and maximum 12 consecutive months



Special Research Fund: visiting scientists (6/6)

  • Visits of postdoctoral foreign researchers:

  • open to all countries

  • Beneficial for ongoing research cooperation (collaborative projects, co-publications)

  • Submission of applications: via a professor at UGent

  • Evaluation of applications: research council at UGent

  • Duration: 12 months (exceptional extendible)

  • The mobility grant is minimum 1 500 €/month
