DETERMINANTS OF FORMING A PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY

Paper presented at the European Conference on Educational Research,
University of Hamburg, 17-20 September 2003

1 Presentation topic

In the seminar entitled »Determinants of forming a professional identity« we will deal with the issue of creating an identity on the level of a professional discourse. In same time I would like to show you basic educational determinants of quality worker. By thinking about quality worker we will not stop only about description of his charateristics, but we will do step forder and analize determinants of development and formulation of quality worker.

Seminar with a title »Determinants of forming professional identity« will be first of all deal with a question of correlation between modern trends of formulation professional components of workers on one hand and vision of a company on the other hand. I will analize forming of modern professional identity which conform global orientate economical trends.
We can find a reason for this question in analize of professional education of workers. Proffesional education include getting knowledge, informations and skills, which are reflection of certain professional orders in a organizations. All those can be components of working quality, but thi is still not enought for succesfull work. In mine opinion professional identity is the key for conecting knowledge, informations and skills with needs of working organizations. At the moment when the worker equlize all those components, we can espect his maximize succes.

2 Definition of professional identity

We can find defintition of identity in Antion Greek with clasical philosophs. They understud identity as equlizing with someone or something. Parmenid and Heraklit comlete this definition with diametral fact. Parmenid said that identity is something static but Heraklit define identity as devoted to development and changes.

This definition later influence on psyhological discipline, which define self-identity as a static part of individum and social identity as a dinamic component. Psyhological division inflenced on Carl Dubar, as a clasic of proffessional identity. Which notify on idenitity as a process of diferentiation and generalization on field of profession and occupation. On conception of this defintion I understud proffessional identity as:

“social way of forming a professional platform of individuum, on his own biografy base”

Proffessional identity is result of permament socialization process, but with globalization become a new form. Even though it might appear paradoxical to discuss professional identity at a time defined by the tendencies of economic and social globalisation, the professional identity is obtaining a new base in the globalisation period, a base which is restructuring the entire notion. We can often hear thoughts that the relation between globalisation and identity is diametric, for identity is supposedly based on continuity and rejects the dynamics demanded by the principals of the globalisation process. At such a division of the functionality of the identity and globalisation processes the interpretation of the relation is surely correct, however the issues emerge whether the appearance of the identity is as static as it seems at first glance and does the globalisation process maybe also not demand a static component. We can find basic platform for understanding modern proffessional identity in diferent social trends. In now days we can not define professional identity as predestinate and stabile form. Because of mobility, unstady jobs and flexibility is proffessional identity complex and problematic.
The analysis of the determinants of forming the professional identity soon brings us to the thoughts on the revitalisation on the described diametricalness between the globalisation and identity processes also in the professional field. Professional identity within the globalisation of the society and economy does not form merely as a static formation defined by predeteminination, for its foundation is also formed on the basis of flexibility, mobility and diffusion. Due to the aforementioned characteristics it might be wise to define professional identity as a network identity.

3 Presentation of determinants forming a professional identity

The analysis of the determinants of forming the professional identity will be first of all talk about modern crissis of professional identity. Professional identity is very often define with concept reticulation, which particularly expose her essence and acktuality. Many analitics of modern professional identity define her as identity in crissis and stagnation. I personly do not agree with that opinion, because I understand modern professional identity as network identity and not as identity in crissis. With this I want sign new form of professional identity. In now days on work place do not exist constant valuables, but employee must be mobile, flexibile and inovate. Employee can not react on needs of working place with constant solution, but all the time he have to complement his own concept of vocation. We can see this on level of relations between knowledge and competences. If traditional work place want from us specific level of knowledge, but now days we do not need only knowledge but we need competences. Competences do not include only knowledge, but whole personality of worker, which permanent modulation his own needs and ambicions of work place.

In order to precisely define the basic characteristics that form the contemporary network professional identity we have divided the analysis of the determinants that form the professional identity into two basic groups of factors:
a. psychological and

b. sociologic

This determinatns did not only exactly explain work place and subjekt of a employee, but they also influente on concept of modern professional identity.

3.1 Psyhological Determinants

Psyhological determinants will help us to describe psyhological proces of individuum. First of all I will introduce you self-identity of employee, which base on two levels: intezation and perception of self personality in reation to ather employees.

For successful forming of professional identity is special important proces of identization. Proces of identization can we define as proces, which empower avtonomy and separation of other subject, because of his own specifics. For making self-identity must employee have oportunity to articulate his own personal characteristcs. At the moment when he could articulate his characteristics on work place, he will have oportunities for forming identitity on other levels of personality. By forming identity we must consider two primary conditions, which are: security need and need for integration in a goup. Satisfaction of last need empower individuum to form his own self-identity in a proces of perception. Employee form his own self-identity on a principle of self-perception and integration experiences with other employees and company. His self-reflection include introspection of his own experiences and obsevrvation reaction of others on his behavior. On this base he form judgement about his self. This presupose his own definition of self. But his opinions about his self are never final and absolute objective. They based on his subjective presentations, which (un)avere change objective platform of self-perception and percepcion of his own vocation. With synthes between self-percetion and perception of another employees create dialog between self-identity and social identity.

3.2 Social Determinants

By interpretation of social determinants of forming professional identity we will focus on theory of “social construction of reality”, on vocation platform . Basic idea of this theory is form professional identity with active cooperation in intersubjektive proces of counstruct company. Company, as institucional world, is for employee secoundary world, which he can not change by his own wishes. That company could become employee primary social world must start process of internalization of social habits. This process form with professional socialization. Process of professional socialization must start two process, satisfied needs of employee and process of converzation. Employee will integrate vocation world in a moment, when company will realize his own needs and wishes. Last is posibile only, when employee interprate company and other employees as homogene referential groupe. This referential groupe must realize his needs. On the other side have important role by successful professional socialization permament changing of short-term goals by way to satisfaction his own needs.

Exposed process become in globalization new value. In modern times become forward proces of converzation in professional socialization. With process of converzation employee form uninterrupted new conceptions of professional identity. Last one employee empower chase changes in work groupe and company and he become oportunity to aclimatize his own professional identity with new changes. Basic with this process is permanent analize interaction between satisfaction needs and real place in company and work group. That analize for employee will be easier company must fortify interaction on formal and unformal level.

4 Conclusion

In this seminar I wanted introduce you often discriminate question of forming a professional identity. I see reason for last in understanding professional identity as diametral level of globalization trends. By reading examinations with this subject we can find definition of identity as unusefull concept in globalization. I do not agree with this and define professional identity in globalization as new form, which empower employee to modulate new changes in economy. Successful realization of this give employee chance that, with adequate forming professional identity, maximize his quantitative and qualitative production on work place.

After define professional identity we have dealt with the psychological determinants of professional identity and took a closer look at all those subjective processes, which enable the identification process of the individual with his profession. The dominant role on this level is represented by the professional authority, which takes place on the basis of two processes: identification and perception of one’s own personality on the basis of the reflection of others. If the latter process enables us to form our personality on the basis of the reflection of others the process of identification can be defined as a process or a group of processes which should enable one to reach autonomy and the division from other subjects due to one’s own differences which appear on the basis of the articulation of one’s own personality and the search for those segments of the individual that set him apart from others.
With the sociological determinants we have on one hand analysed the social component of forming the subjective identity of the employee and the process of forming the social mechanisms of common identities on the other. The spreading of the social determinants of professional identity is a discourse, which integrates the moments of socialisation to the level of professional identity. In order for the profession to establish itself as the primary world of the subject or at least come close to this it is necessary to establish a process of internalisation of the social senses which take place through professional socialisation. Through the professional socialisation process two processes must be set up between the subject and the profession. The subject will successfully identify with the demanded professional world only at the moment when he will be enabled to realise his basic needs. This is possible only when the profession is presented to the subject as a homogenous reference group. On the other hand an important role in a successful professional socialisation in the globalisation process is represented by successful monitoring of short-term goals on the way to fulfilling one’s own needs. With globalisation the conversion process is coming to the front of the professional socialisation process and this enables the subject to develop a dynamic conception as regards the profession and thus form new professional identities.
The analysis of the determinants of forming professional identity not only opens new possibilities for the confirmation of the interpretation of the professional identity as a network identity but also enables us to create new foundations for the formation of professional education and training. It is necessary to keep in mind that the changed functional notion of the professional identity demands a professional educational system which forms a firm basic knowledge base as a basis for a superstructure on one side and the capabilities of adjusting to the changing professional structures on the other.
