Purpose

This unit standard is for people who wish to enter or are employed in the motor industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to identify vehicle body metal to be prepared, and prepare vehicle body metal for top coats of paint.

Explanatory notes

2 Legislation, regulations and/or industry standards relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to the current version of including updated amendments to, and replacements of – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; Spray Coating Regulations 1962; Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Isocyanates (WorkSafe).

4 Definitions

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications and legislative requirements.

Service information may include but is not limited to – technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This may be accessed from the manufacturer.

Suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task in a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
5 Assessment

For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.


Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Identify vehicle body metal to be prepared.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Metals used on motor vehicles are identified.
Range may include but is not limited to – mild steel, high strength steel, ultra high strength steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, stainless steel; properties – colour, hardness, magnetic.
1.2 Vehicle and paint manufacturer specifications when preparing bare metal are sourced and interpreted.
Range includes but is not limited to – adhesion, paint compatibility, warranty, safety, paint system.
Outcome 2
Prepare vehicle body metal for top coats of paint.
Evidence requirements
2.1 Materials used to prepare vehicle body metal for top coat are identified and used.
Range may include but is not limited to – anti-corrosive primers and fillers, metal conditioners, cleaners, abrasives, masking materials.
2.2 Methods of preparing bare metal for painting are identified and carried out, and the metal is prepared for top coat of paint.
Range cleaning, adhesion, undercoating.
2.3 Adjacent areas not being painted are identified and remain undamaged.
Range damage caused by – overspray, sanding marks, scratches.
2.4 Drying time is observed in accordance with paint manufacturer specifications, and primed surface is free of defects.
Range surface is free of – dirt, runs, dryspray, heavy orange peel, uneven coating.
2.5 Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away, the work area is cleaned, and materials are stored.
