Check out the new narthex lights at St. Paul’s. The narthex bulletin board, so artfully created each month by, either John and Betty Ridinger or Bonnie Yingling, now is ‘in the light.’ Overhead lighting as well has been enhanced with new lighting and the original lights have been moved to the Sunday School Room, where they will match those in the sanctuary. “The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.” St. Paul’s has New Working Constitution After diligently working since January 11, 2007 re-writing St. Paul’s constitution, it has been formally approved at a meeting of St. Paul’s congregation on March 29 and by the Delaware-Maryland Synod Council on May 27, 2009. We now have a working constitution on record! Many thanks to Constitution Task Force members, who have put in many long hours on this project: Walt Dayett (chair), Glenn Fream, John and Betty Ridinger, Marlin Six, Shirley Staley (sec), and Pastor Faye Snyder. Congratulations, St. Paul’s!
Mt Joy and St. Paul’s Councils have voted to give Bibles to our children. This September, our children age 2 through grade 3, will be presented with SPARK Story Bibles. These Bibles are rich in graphic artistry, filled with all our favorite stories of God’s love and very human Bible characters. Grade 4 up to Confirmation age will receive a SPARK Children’s Bible.
At Mt. Joy and St. Paul’s, nominating committees are diligently praying, meeting, and working to enlist four council members for each congregation for 2010. We ask members to pray and think if God may be calling you to this very worth-while leadership position. Council is responsible for (according to our constitutions) oversight of the life and activities of this congregation , in particular its worship life, to the end that everything be done in accordance with the Word of God and the faith and practice of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Youth Sunday September 13 Heidi Benner, Zack Miller, and Catherine Nicholson will highlight their adventures in New Orleans, where they attended Jesus, Justice, Jazz, the ELCA National Youth Gathering with 37,000 other youth from across the country. Joy and St. Paul’s, Sitting here gazing out my office window, I lean back in my chair and absorb the soothing view of layered hills, some in sunlight, others shrouded in mist. Sitting here meditating on God’s lush creation and his incredible love, I understand when people say they can worship in nature as well as in buildings made by human hands. Something happens, though, when we all gather together on Sunday mornings to worship together. As our voices are raised together and our souls are lifted to God together, we form the bond that Christ intended for his church. A church is not just a group of individuals, but the Body of Christ together. Recently, a study was done, and Lutherans were asked, “What is the most important part of worship, the most sacred, meaningful event for you?” An overwhelming 83% answered Holy Communion was the center of their worship lives. This summer we’ve heard many sermons on Jesus as the Living Bread; we’ve heard Jesus’ commands to “eat his flesh and drink his blood whenever we meet.” I hope you have been thinking about it. Holy Communion is one of only two sacraments for the Lutheran Church. The other is Holy Baptism. Being only two of them, each is of utmost importance to us. A long time practice, such as Holy Communion may be taken for granted as we forget it is the body and blood of Christ we take into our bodies as we gather round the altar rail. In Holy Communion, we absorb the essence of Christ Jesus’spirit; God's forgiveness reconciles us to God and to one another; frees us from sin, death, and evil; nourishes, strengthens, and sustains us; binds us together as the Body of Christ in this place; and strengthens us for service in the world. Communion every Sunday and on festivals is the norm for Lutherans. Participation is by Christ's invitation and is never forced. Now - What does Holy Communion mean to you? It is with sincere gratitude that I say THANK YOU for your prayers, cards, food, phone calls, and flowers (Altar Guild) and transportation I received during recuperation from my fall and subsequent surgery. Thanks also to Pastor Faye for her visits (including hospital and ER) and uplifting prayers. You truly are a caring community! God bless all of you, Kathryn Weikert We would like to thank everyone for all the support we have received since our son, Tanner Yingling, was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer. All the donations, dinners, prayers and overwhelming support from all of our family, friends, neighbors, businesses and organizations have been greatly appreciated. Words cannot express how thankful we truly are. We are overwhelmed by all the generosity and outpouring of love and support for our sweet little boy. Jeffrey Yingling, Stephanie (Stambaugh) Yingling & Tanner Pastor Faye and family and friends at Mt. Joy – Thank you all for your cards, letters, well wishes, concerns, prayers and visits while Lloyd (Don) was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for cancer. At Lloyd’s follow-up visit, his doctor gave him a clean bill of health. He will continue to have his blood and body checked periodically for any signs of reoccurrence. Please convey our thanks to the wonderful praying people of your parish. Jerry is doing very well after his back surgery.
