ABOUT THE SEMINAR & AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE SEMINAR :
Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was one of the most remarkable men that India produced in the 18th century A.D. His spirit had again and again shone in the brave deeds of his co-religionists in the cause of the poor and the helpless. He possessed all the qualities of a great warrior and a natural leader of the people, a friend of the weak and oppressed. In fact, Guru Guru Gobind Singh decided to send one of his followers back to the Punjab to rouse the peasantry. The choice fell on Banda Bahadur. He was liberal in his treatment of Hindus and Muslims many of whom joined the Sikh faith and took up arms under him. He was the first to seize territory for the Khalsa and paved the way of the ultimate conquest of the Punjab by them. In the conquered territory extending several Mughal sarkars, Banda Bahadar had virtually supplanted the Mughal Empire. He heralded the new state by striking a coin, deriving his authority from God through the grace of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. He shook one of the most powerful empires in the world to its very foundations with such violence that it was never again able to reestablish its authority. In the late 19th and early 20th Century Banda Bahadur inspired revolutionaries across India and the Sikhs in the Punjab.

Banda Singh Bahadur was the first man among the Sikhs who laid down the foundation of political sovereignty of the Khalsa. He was the master of the whole region lying between the Sutlej and Jamuna and he reigned and exacted tributes from all sections of the population. He made Sikhism popular with the people of Punjab by his bravery and generosity. He had sown what the Khalsa State meant. He had brought about a revolution in the minds of the Sikhs and the oppressed Sections of the Society. A will was created among the Sikhs and the other oppressed to have their own way.

Banda Singh Bahadur, thus, played a significant role in the history of the Sikhs, history of this region comprising present day Punjab, Haryana, parts of Jammu and Himachal Pradesh as well as in the history of the 18th Century in India. Banda Singh Bahadur successfully initiated the process of struggle against the politically oppressive state, economic upliftment of the common men and the peasantry, social-equality among all the classes with the sole aim of establishing an egalitarian state and society. Banda Singh Bahadur in a way started a kind of revolutionary changes in the political, socio-cultural, and economic aspects of the people of this area which continued in the time to come during the courses of 19th and 20th centuries.

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Chair for the last three years is actively engaged on the study and research on the different dimensions/aspects related to the Ideology, achievements and legacy of this great martyr. In this direction earlier the Chair had organized a two-day National Seminar on ‘Revisiting Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and His Times” on 2nd-3rd April, 2013. Eminent historians and scholars across the country had made their presentation in that Seminar with special reference to the Persian and Sikh historiography on the subject. Afterwards, a one-day special Academic Programme was organized by the Chair on the 344th Birth Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur on 13th November, 2014 where eminent historians debated on the Rajasthani Sources for the reconstruction of the history of Banda Singh Bahadur. In this ongoing process the Chair now proposes that a One-Day National Seminar may be organized which may especially focus on the activities of Banda Singh Bahadur in the present day Haryana, formation of the first Sikh State and as well as the historiography on this aspect.

It is with this background that Baba Banda Singh bahadur Chair and Department of History will organize a One-Day a national Seminar on “Banda Singh Bahadur and The First Sikh State”. In this national Seminar the eminent historians, scholars and researchers from the differenet parts of India/ different Universities of India will participate as Keynote Speaker, Valedictory Speaker, Guests of Honour, and Chairpersons of the Technical Sessions, Delegates and Resource Persons. This national Seminar will make a humble attempt to add one more chapter to the study and research on the different aspects/themes related to the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur especially the activities of the Khalsa in the present day Haryana.
