ABOUT THE SEMINAR & AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE SEMINAR :

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was one of the most remarkable men that India produced in the 18th century A.D. He was commissioned by Guru Gobin Singh to Punjab as a Commander of the Khalsa forces. He was instructed to wage an armed struggle against the unjust rule of the Mughals in North India and to establish a Sovereign Sikh State. He was liberal in his treatment of Hindus and Muslims and many of whom joined the Sikh faith and took up arms under him. He was the first to seize territory for the Khalsa and paved the way of the ultimate conquest of the Punjab by them. In the conquered territory extending several Mughal sarkars, Banda Bahadar had virtually supplanted the Mughal Empire. He heralded the new State by striking a coin, deriving his authority from God through the grace of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. He shook one of the most powerful empires in the world to its very foundations with such violence that it was never again able to reestablish its authority.

Banda Singh Bahadur was the first man among the Sikhs who laid down the foundation of political sovereignty of the Khalsa. He was the master of the whole region lying between the Sutlej and Jamuna and he reigned and exacted tributes from all sections of the population. He made Sikhism popular with the people of Punjab by his bravery and generosity. He had sown what the Khalsa State meant. He had brought about a revolution in the minds of the Sikhs and a will was aroused among the common men to struggle against the oppresive system.

Besides leading a war against the tyranny of the Mughal Government, the Sikh movement under Banda Singh Bahadur also signified a powerful protest against the beneficiaries of the existing structure of authority. He attempted to abolished the zamindari system and introduced peasant proprietorship. Large estates were broken into smaller holdings in the lands of Sikh or Hindu peasants. These agrarian changes, of a great extent, ameliorated the lot of the poor peasantry. The declaration of the abolition of Jagirdari System and rights of proprietorship is recognized even today as one of the best fiscal reforms done by Banda Singh Bahadur.

Banda Singh Bahadur, finally sarificed his life at the altar of nationa and for th cause of the common man when he was exeuted on a 9th June 1716 at Mehrauli, New Delhi. The tri-centenary year of the martydom of this great personality was celebrated during the year 2016 by the Government of Haryana, Punjab and Banda Singh Bahadur Sikh Samparday and other social organizations. Banda Singh Bahadur in a way started a kind of revolutionary changes in the political, socio-cultural, and economic aspects of the people of this area which continued in the time to come during the courses of 19th and 20th centuries.

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Chair since June 2012 is actively engaged on the study and research on the different dimensions/aspects related to the Ideology, achievements and legacy of this great martyr. In this direction earlier the Chair had organized a two day National Seminar on ‘Revisiting Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and His Times” on 2nd-3rd April, 2013. Eminent historians and scholars across the country had made their presentation in that Seminar with special reference to the Persian and Sikh historiography on the subject. Afterwards, a one-day special Academic Programme was organized by the Chair on the 344th Birth Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur on 13th November, 2014 where eminent historians debated on the Rajasthani Sources for the reconstruction of the history of Banda Singh Bahadur. Afterwards a One-day National Seminar on, Banda Singh Bahadur and the First Sikh State, was organized on October 16, 2015 where the scholars debated on the significance of the First Sikh State and the celeberations of tri-centenary year of the mardytdom of Banda Singh Bahadur.

It is with this background that Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Chair realize that there is a dire need to organize a national Seminar on “Banda Singh Bahadur and His Activities in Haryana”.
