N1: Law and Order in the American West, 1840 to 1895

N1: Scene 1: How Wild Was The Wild West?

N2: (A dusty street in Dodge City. Enter Geoff Gridges and Nat Ramon at one end of the street and Joss Prolin at the other. They face each other, eyes narrowed, hands hovering, ready to draw their six shooters. Everybody looks grim and tough. Even the horses.)

Geoff Gridges: (To Prolin) You’re a black-hearted killer, Chaney.

Nat Ramon: You murdered that Homesteader in cold blood.

Geoff Gridges: It’s guys like you that give the Wild West a bad name.

Joss Prolin: Well hush my mouth, if it ain’t Deputy U.S. Marshal Cogburn and Texas Ranger Laboeuf.

Geoff Gridges: I am an employee of the U.S. government....

Nat Ramon: And I work for the state of Texas, and we’re both here to uphold the law.

Joss Prolin: There ain’t no law out here. This is the Wild West and no marshal, no rangers, no sheriffs, no judges, not even the Pinkerton Detective Agency is gonna stop me killin’ and shootin’ up the town.

Geoff Gridges: Shut your mouth and go for your gun.

Nat Ramon: Yeah, cut the small talk. Let’s start shootin’ each other.

Joss Prolin: Fine by me.

N1: (SFX of a massive shoot out. Geoff Gridges drops down behind a desk and opens fire, as Joss Prolin runs the width of the room doing rapid fire, one hand knocking the hammer back after each shot. Nat Ramon spins around on the spot, firing in all directions. They stop firing. Nobody has been hit.)

Director: And CUT!

Assistant Director: Anybody hurt? Geoff? Joss? Nat? Everybody okay?

N2: (The actors drop their tough guy characters. Suddenly they are A List celebrities. Make Up Artists and Assistant Director rush across with chairs, drinks, towels and make up bags and make a big fuss of them.)

Geoff Gridges: I seriously pulled a muscle doing that.

Nat Ramon: Can someone get me a diet soda? I’m dying here.

Joss Prolin: I am such a mess. That dust has gotten everywhere.

N1: (Make Up Artists 1 and 2 get out their blusher brushes and flick the dust off their faces. Joss, Nat and Geoff turn their cheeks helpfully.)

Make Up Artist 1: Is that what the American West was like back then? All shoot-outs and stuff?

Geoff Gridges: Sure was. There was no law and order. It was every man for himself.

Assistant Director: Law and order was well established on the east coast of America, but this film is set in the Wild West. It took a while for society to get established there.

Make Up Artist 2: So gunfights and murders happened every day then?

Joss Prolin: Sure did. My character kills just about everyone that gets in his way.

Make Up Artist 1: But is that what the American West was really like? I mean, how realistic is this film you’re making?
