Cosimo de Medici was born in Florence, Italy in September 27 1389. His father was Giovanni de’ Medici. He became the first from the Medici family to have political power. He was like the king of Florence. He was so powerful because of his money, which helped him control most of the votes. Cosimo helped Florence because the Medici bank helped businesses and he was a patron of a lot of artists. Cosimo is very well known for being a patron to Brunelleschi and with his help they completed the Santa Maria del Fiore dome. Cosimo influenced the renaissance because he patronized many artist and geniuses that helped shape the era. We are affected by him today because many of the works of art we admire and study today were possible because of him and how he payed the artists.

I think that Cosimo got most of his ideas by the slow hunch. For example he got the idea to patronize Brunelleschi because he knew that the people of Florence were ashamed of not having a dome. He wanted to do something about it and I think that after letting the idea develop slowly so when he met with Brunelleschi and got the idea to hire him, it didn’t just come to him. He had been thinking about that for some time. I also think that his decision to show his power to the people through art came in slow hunch as well because he knew he needed to show his power and influence and he couldn’t just show money. After thinking about it for some time he realized that art was the perfect way to do that. Another idea that came Cosimo developed through the small hunch was to build the Medici family and an academy for scholars to study the Greeks. After realizing how he could show influence through art I believe that he decided he wanted to do something more. Since the Renaissance was a time when knowledge became important again he came up with the idea to build those things to help support the scholars and show his power at the same time.

I believe that Cosimo de´Medici became a genius because of his surroundings and his family. Cosimos father Giovanni de Medici owned a bank. Cosimos father decided to patronize Baladassare the pirate that wanted to become a pope. I think that when Baladassare became the pope Cosimo realized how patronizing people would later pay off. I believe that this later inspired him to patronize artists because patronizing the pope is what really helped the Medici bank become successful and gain fame. Another way that Cosimo became a genius through his family was when he was banished. Cosimos friends wanted him to return but he didn´t because he remembered how his father had advised him to wait to be summoned. This later paid off because the pope demanded that he returned and when he did he got control of the Florence. Early in his life Cosimo learned that he could use money to control people. He used this knowledge to buy votes. This was important because later when he was about to be killed he bribed the people and was set free.
