Textbook: Beginning & Intermediate Algebra, 6th Edition, Elayn Martin-Gay. ISBN# 9780134194004

Information about the textbook: This is the same book that we use for Math 930. If you purchase a MyMathLab account, it comes with all of the pages from Beginning and Intermediate Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay as an E-Text. A MyMathLab access code comes along with the custom edition at no extra charge, if you buy it new at the bookstore, so don’t throw that access code away, in case you need it for Math 930.



General course description

Prerequisite: None.

This course will cover concepts in algebra concerning linear functions and factoring.

Topical outline: Introductory algebra including fractions, signed numbers, measurement geometry, absolute value, simplifying algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, straight lines; graphing; and systems of equations.

 

Student learning outcomes: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:



  • Perform numerical computations involving fractions, signed
    numbers, and absolute value

  • Apply laws of (positive integer) exponents

  • Find the GCD and LCM of a finite set of integers

  • Add and subtract polynomials

  • Solve linear equations

  • Graph points

  • Find the equations of a line

  • Solve a system of equations

  • Use elementary function notation

Sections: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 5.1, Geometry Supplement.

Requirements:

Homework: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. The assignments are due on the day of the Exams. You should complete the work daily. A complete assignment will be given full credit. Late assignments are not accepted under any circumstances. All assignments must be stapled, or I will deduct points. Plan on studying and completing homework a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Exams: We will have 3 tests throughout the semester. The dates of the tests are on the attached schedule. To count for any possible emergencies, one missed exam or your lowest exam grade will be replaced by the final if it improves your grade. Keep your eyes on your own papers during exams.

No calculators or notes are allowed during exams. No make-up exams are allowed

Quizzes: Short quizzes may be given at random, besides the first and last week.

Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final. Students not taking the final exam will get NC for the class.

Grading system: 

Homework 10% ( 5% written and 5% MyMathLab )

Quizzes 10%

Exams 40%

Final Exam 40 %

Math 920 is graded A/B/C/NC.

Grade Scale: 90 – 100% A

80 – 89% B

70 – 79% C

Below 60 % NC

Students are responsible for announcements made on days that they are absent.

Failure to do so may result in missed deadlines or other consequences that might adversely affect students. Note that you can forward this email account to any other account of your choosing.

Your next math class: After you pass Math 920 this semester, you are required to take Math 930 next semester. Please remember that you are required to pass Math 920 and 930 within your first year at CSULA.
