MAYORS’ CHALLENGE NATIONAL ECONOMICS CHALLENGE CHECKLIST

This in-person competition is held each semester for middle and high school students to compete in teams to test their knowledge on economics, monetary policy, international trade, and markets. National Finalists will be invited to an all-expense paid trip to New York City.


Interest Form

    • Fill out the Teacher Interest form https://azecon.wufoo.com/forms/z15wjesh1x5jkui/ no later than February 15, 2018

Which Competition to Choose

      • Adam Smith (requires AP, IB, Honors Economics or 2 semesters of Economics in HS)

      • David Ricardo (requires 1 semester Economics in HS or may include 8th graders that have taken 1 credit in Economics)

      • Milton Friedman (All MS)


State Preparation

    • Form teams of 3 to 4 students -At least two teams from each school may compete in each competition and each division (please contact challenge@azecon.org if you would like to bring more than two teams).

    • State competition to be held April 6, 2018 at Mesa Community College

    • Work with school for student permission slips and student transportation

    • Review sample questions and rules http://azecon.org/economics-challenge.html

    • Mid- February teachers will be asked for Student/Team registration – Teams will need to be registered by March 1, 2018


Day of State Competition

    • Arrive at Mesa Community College

    • Students will take a series of three multiple choice exams: microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics

    • The top 2 highest scoring teams in the multiple choice exams in each division will face off in a Quiz Bowl

    • Winner of the MS and HS Quiz Bowl is the State Champion


State High School Champions Advance to Nationals – Adam Smith and David Ricardo ONLY

    • Highest Scoring High School advances to the National Semi-Final

    • Review the National Council Economic Education website http://councilforeconed.org/national-economics-challenge/

    • Review the National Council Economic Education information on preparing your teams http://councilforeconed.org/preparing-your-team/

    • On April 24, 2018 the national semi-final online test will be administered by the winning teams teacher

    • The top 8 teams nationally in each high school division are invited to participate in the Economics Challenge Final in New York, May 19-May 21.
