Message from the Minister of Education and
Human Resources
It is with immense pleasure that I present today to the entire
population of Mauritius this first document produced by the
Akademi Kreol Morisien (AKM) entitled “Lortograf Kreol
Morisien”.
This document represents the collective effort of a dedicated group that has for long been
militating for the establishment of Kreol Morisien as an official language and for the introduction
of Kreol Morisien into the classroom.
The government in which I have the pleasure and honour to serve as a State Minister has made it
a crucial part of its policy to give this language its legitimate place in the education system. This
is not so much because it will merely help our pupils to better apprehend concepts and
knowledge, but principally because a mother tongue needs to be ascribed its due credentials.
I distinctly recall the National Forum that my Ministry organized on the subject on 30 August
2010. This was a historic moment - a groundbreaking achievement in that it rallied a number of
individuals and organizations together with everyone reading from the same song script - all
realizing that the time had come for the language to occupy a place of pride in our educational
system and working consensually towards it.
This first printed edition of “Lortograf Kreol Morisien” is a reference for all those who will
further contribute to preparing the way for the introduction of the language as an optional subject
in schools. The document will also help all of us to write a standardized Kreol Morisien.
But this “Lortograf Kreol Morisien” is just the beginning. There are other facets of the language
that the Akademi is working on that relate to the grammar as well the production of curricular
materials while in parallel the mounting of teacher training programs will soon be seeing the light
of day.
Language is part of a culture. It is also a reflection of an identity. The
beauty of Kreol Morisien is
that it belongs to no single ethnic group of Mauritius but to everyone. It is ultimately part and
parcel of the Mauritan way of life, of the Mauritian psyche. As such it provides a collective
identity as well, allowing all of us to seek, secure and sustain our roots in it.
So kudos to all who over the decades have been engaged in the laudable endeavour to give the
language its sound foundations. Building the edifice is now the responsibility of the AKM.
I wish accordingly to put on record my sincere appreciation to all members of the AKM and all
those who collaborated in the Working Group to provide a concise validated writing system for
Kreol Morisien.
Do keep up the good work - you have the blessings of the entire nation.
