MINUTES FROM THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP – SLOAN MEDICAL CENTRE (SMC)
MONDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER 2016

Present:

Clare Hague, D Cowlishaw, Rosemary Cowley, Roy Cowley, Liz Wade, R Algar, Peter Pternitis, Mike Simpkin, Pauline Linton, Cynthia Smith, Maya Moudnami, Dr Oliver Hart (OH), Helen Proud (SMC Practice Manager) (HP) and Lisa Board (SMC Assistance Practice Manager) (LB).

Apologies

No apologies have been received prior to the meeting.

Dr Oliver Hart (OH) called the meeting to order.
Previous Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting were agreed.

Items from Patients

Electronic Prescriptions (ETP). It was noted that the ETP on the whole is working well. There are a few problems at Lloyds Pharmacy at Jordonthorpe. They are providing all the items on RD when the patient doesn’t require them yet eg creams, lotions etc. OH explained that Pharmacies only get paid if they dispense all the products which is why they may be encouraging the patient to have everything. CCG is aware of this and looking into ways to control this. The alternative is to return to FP10s and highlight what is required which is putting the burden on the patient. Lo’s Pharmacy seems to be very good at only giving what is required after discussion with the patient.
Phlebotomy Clare Hague commented that they hadn’t experienced any further painful blood tests since raising their concerns at previous meetings.
Cancelled Operations SMC was asked to comment on the Government cancelling cataract and knee operations in other areas of the country. OH suggested that it could possibly be down to a different CCG. Sheffield has not yet been required to cancel operations due to budget deficits although they are in financial difficulty. The Government already makes cuts eg paracetamol and Vitamin D are no longer on prescription as it is cheaper to buy over the counter.
Shingles Vaccinations

Age 70, 71, 73 and 79 on 1st September 2016 (routine programme)

Age 78 on 1st September (catch up)

Flu Vaccinations Would SMC consider getting a banner displayed “Have you had your flu jab”. LB to price.
Concern was raised that some patients may not receive their jab if they could not attend the clinics or have text or email to receive the information. HP informed the group that a list was kept and monitored and patients were telephoned by reception to make an appointment after the 2 Saturday clinics have been held.
Pneumonia Vaccinations

If a patient has had Pneumonia before or they are over 65 years old they will be offered a vaccination for this. The patient only requires 1 per lifetime under new advice.

Other PPGs

Cynthia Smith and M Simpkin went to the PPG Locality Meeting last month. There were 18 other PPGs represented. They understood that the triage system was becoming the norm throughout the PPGs. Some of the other PPGs seem to have a more patient structured format to their meetings. OH welcomed this and would encourage the patients to structure the meeting to suit their requirements. OH also was delighted that patients could attend other PPGs and feedback to this PPG.

CCG Annual Meeting at Sheffield United Football Ground on Tuesday 13th September 2016 at 2pm – 4pm. All welcome. The Editor of the Sheffield Star is to quiz the Directors of CCG and GPs at their Annual Public Meeting
CCG Proposed Neighbourhoods

OH explained what happens in our area. Some of the allocated money for this project could be used towards communicating what is relevant in the community.

Items from the Agenda
New way of working starting with Diabetic patients (OH)

SMC generally tries to review each diabetic patient every year. We have approx. 650 diabetic patients and SMC intends to start with this group of patients to help them understand their condition. If SMC can establish what is required for each patient then it can decide who is best for them to see as it isn’t always the Doctor or a Practice Nurse they would need to see. Education through the coffee mornings etc would be a good platform. OH hopes that Diabetes will be the start of illnesses that we can use this format.

Neighbourhood meeting Tuesday 13th September 6-7pm at SMC. Currently OH has received approx. 30 replies with 20 further people expressing an interest. PPG was invited by OH and would be most welcome to attend. A guest from the Engagement Team from CCG is coming to give tips on managing diabetes and helping patients with information. PP stated that quality control of the speakers is essential to ensure that everyone is getting the correct information. Maya and Peter Pternitis expressed an interest in attending.

Bus Lane and Sloan Car Park Alterations

HP reported that SMC had objected to the council along with Lo’s Pharmacy and Lidl and estimates that it has delayed commencement of alterations by approx. 8 months. HP to keep the Group informed of any changes.

Date of Next Meeting 12th December 2016 at 6pm at SMC. 2 Little London Road.
OH thanked everyone for attending and declared the meeting closed.
