Jannis Samaras of Kofola named Entrepreneur Of The Year of the Czech Republic for 2011

Jaroslav Klíma of TESCAN becomes Technology Entrepreneur of the Year for 2011
Prague, 15 February 2012 Jannis Samaras, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Kofola S.A., won the prestigious Entrepreneur Of The Year award for 2011. Czech Minister of Finance Miroslav Kalousek and Magdalena Souček, Country Managing Partner of Ernst & Young, presented the winner with the trophy at the Prague Žofín Palace on 15 February 2012. The contest has been organized by Ernst & Young in the Czech Republic since 2000. The Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year award went to Jaroslav Klíma, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TESCAN, a.s., Marek Potysz of MOJE AMBULANCE a.s. was awarded the Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year title. This year‘s recipient of the Social Entrepreneur Of The Year title is Dolores Czudková of the civic association Ergon – Chráněná dílna.
I am standing here thanks to all the people at Kofola, my colleagues, and the team which is taking Kofola forward with me. I know they will be very happy. Thank you Kofola,” said the winner Jannis Samaras, giving his first impressions.
I believe Jannis Samaras of Kofola and his business story will equally impress the judges at the world finals in Monte Carlo and he and Kofola will successfully represent entrepreneurs from the Czech Republic,” says Magdalena Souček, Country Managing Partner of Ernst & Young in the Czech Republic, adding, “Through this competition we not only aspire to award outstanding entrepreneurs, but also to boost business development in the country. Among the nominees are those who started a business in a garage twenty years ago, and also those who have managed to continue the tradition by picking up the family business founded a century ago. The contestants have built companies capable of succeeding in tough competition, and some built unique ventures that have no competition at all. They comprise both seasoned veterans we admire and up-and-coming entrepreneurs we are rooting for.”
Winner profile: Jannis Samaras, Kofola

Jannis Samaras was born in Czechoslovakia to Greek parents with an entrepreneurial spirit. Up to this day, Mr. Samara considers his father Kostas his best business role model. He started his business in 1990 with three partners, René Sommer, Tomáš Jendřejk and René Musila, and it was a perfect match, as he is fond of reiterating. Kofola is currently one of the leading producers of soft drinks in Central Europe with nearly 2,000 employees in seven production plants and four markets. Nowadays, Czechs can hardly imagine a summer without drinking draft Kofola, while US competitors keep wondering what is going on in the Czech lands. The company’s product portfolio comprises also a slew of fruit drinks, syrups and concentrates marketed under the name Jupí, in addition to Top Topic and Vinea soda drinks, Jupík favored by children, Rajec natural water, and genuine RC Cola. Last year, after Kofola had acquired Pinelli, it began production of energy drinks Semtex and Erektus. In 2008, when expanding into the highly competitive Polish market, the Kofola-Hoop group took another major step by teaming up with a new investor, Enterprise Investors. But the majority stake of the company remains in the hands of the Czech owners. Jannis Samaras envisions the future in making smart and well thought-out innovations and acquisitions. And his recipe for success? He believes the Kofola team stays ahead of the competition mainly due to creative marketing and product innovations. Accountability, employing one’s own methods with gusto and putting the heart in one’s job are, in his opinion, the key qualities of good entrepreneurship. Mr. Samaras has little leisure time, so whatever he gets he saves for his family. His personal motto? It probably won’t be so surprising it’s the well-known slogan, “When you love it, everything’s right.”

The other Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists were:

Pavel Bouška, BRIT – VAFO PRAHA s.r.o.

Miloslav Pavlas, KOVOLIS HEDVIKOV a.s.

Kamil Vacek, TCCM s.r.o.

Jaroslav Klíma, TESCAN, a.s.
The winner of the Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year award for 2011 is Jaroslav Klíma of TESCAN. The company ranks among major manufacturers of electron microscopes worldwide.
The title of Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year, designed for entrepreneurs who have been in business for less than five years, was awarded to Marek Potysz of MOJE AMBULANCE.
Ernst & Young and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship this year presented the Social Entrepreneur Of The Year award to Dolores Czudková of the civic association Ergon – Chráněná dílna.
The recipient of the MF DNES and iDNES.cz Reader’s Award for the “Best business story” is Jaroslav Zeman of DETOA Albrechtice. The company’s core business is manufacture of wood toys and beads and playing mechanisms for upright pianos and grand pianos.

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 competition is open to any company owner or manager with a 20% or greater ownership interest in the company, or a co-owner of a public company who is primarily responsible for its performance and is an active member of top management. The company must be at least 2 years old. The competition is co-organized by the MF Dnes daily and iDNES.cz. GfK Czech, Raiffeisenbank and Accredio are the competition partners. Support is also provided by the CzechInvest agency, the TUESDAY Business Network, the Czech Venture Capital Association and US Business School Praha. Media partners are the EURO weekly and Český rozhlas Radiožurnál.

Ernst & Young Technology Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 competition finalist:

Jaroslav Klíma, TESCAN, a.s.
Jaroslav Klíma has devoted his entire adult life to electron microscopes. He first went into business out of necessity – after finishing school, he worked as a service engineer and then a developer at Tesla Brno, a manufacturer of electron microscopes. The company went under in the 90s, and Mr. Klíma and his colleagues founded TESCAN. Having gained valuable experience at Tesla by travelling the world to repair microscopes and learning about foreign trade in the process, he was later able to capitalise on this knowledge. Today, TESCAN is one of the world’s leading electron microscope producers and is continuing to expand onto new markets. Tescan instruments can be used by geologists, to detect defects in materials or in criminal science. Mr. Klíma now wishes to focus on increasing the company’s share in key markets in Korea, China, the USA and several EU countries. The company is able to compete with the world‘s giants owing to its top quality technology and state-of-the-art software. TESCAN recognises the importance of innovation, and takes an active part in European scientific projects and collaborates with universities at home and abroad. Mr. Klíma also wants to focus on increasing the sales share of the firm’s more expensive and sophisticated products. In so doing, he believes he will be able to reduce the risk of copying by new Asian competitors, increase profitability and technologically advance product development. TESCAN is growing fast; it currently has 160 employees in Brno and another 40 in the USA and China. The company reported sales of 376 million crowns in 2010 and 659 million in 2011. Mr. Klíma enjoys spending his free time with his three grandchildren. His family is his foundation, the thing that gives him strength and courage. Sports are another way he likes to relax.

Social Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011:

Dolores Czudková – o.s. Ergon - Chráněná dílna
Dolores Czudková studied social pedagogy at Silesian University in Katovice. She later rose from the position of nurse to head of site at Silesian Diakonia, a Christian non-profit that provides social services to people in need. It was there, in 2001, that she had the idea to run a protected workshop, and in early 2004 the independent civic association Ergon - Chráněná dílna was established, its purpose to employ people with disabilities in the Moravia-Silesia region, an area with a very high unemployment rate. Unemployment among persons with disabilities is a serious problem nationwide; there is very little likelihood of their job placement. But thanks to people like Mrs. Czudková, the barriers are being brought down and the public‘s prejudice against the disabled is being overcome. Ergon - Chráněná dílna currently employs some 150 persons with disabilities in various positions, including management, and is one of the largest employers of persons with disabilities in the Czech Republic. In 2010, Ergon embarked on a new project (funded by a 36 million crown EU ROP subsidy) to build a second assembly plant and social centre in an industrial zone in Třinec. Another 50 persons with disabilities were placed in jobs assembling and packaging semi-finished and finished products. Cooperation with the companies STEELL TEC and WALMARK, which placed very large orders, was a tremendous help. Mrs. Czudková has found a perfect way to combine her past experience in social services and her entrepreneurial spirit. At the same time, she feels fulfilled when she sees her employees once again actively engaging in life.

Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011:

Marek Potysz – MOJE AMBULANCE a.s.

Dr. Marek Potysz studied medicine and became a doctor, then head physician in a hospital anaesthesiology and resuscitation department and finally director of a network of hospitals. He then decided to capitalize on his broad healthcare sector experience by going into business for himself. In 2007, he founded MOJE AMBULANCE a.s., which now operates the Czech Republic’s largest chain of outpatient clinics staffed by GPs, providing care at 15 locations and treating nearly 100 000 clients. His firm is the sole healthcare operation of this type in the Czech Republic and is continuing to grow by 25% annually. Dr. Potysz relies on top quality services, close doctor-patient communication and new technology – the company communicates with clients via the internet – through telemedicine services, online advisory, online orders and online registration. While client satisfaction is key, Dr. Potysz’ other priority is to increase the number of locations and clients. Within the context of supporting growth, he is trying to achieve a higher level of client service than is provided in standard private practice, whether this means length of office hours, office décor and surroundings or a quality ordering system. Indeed, the company uses the Triage expert system, where a client enters his basic symptoms and the system assesses potential problems. This year the firm is also preparing to launch a new project: 24-hour physician availability. In running his business, Dr. Potysz favours a fair and friendly approach. Changes are accompanied by training and repeated explanation, and an equity share in the company is just one form of manager motivation. In Dr. Potysz’ opinion, a successful entrepreneur is not afraid to take risks or assume personal responsibility. Dr. Potysz primarily relaxes through sports. He enjoys yachting, golf and basketball.

Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 Czech Republic competition finalists:

Pavel Bouška – BRIT - VAFO Praha s.r.o.
A life with pets is certainly richer than one without: that is the motto and – combined with effective management – the entrepreneurial philosophy of Pavel Bouška. His father, formerly a scientist with the Czech Academy of Sciences, established the family firm in 1994. Mr. Bouška studied in the USA, where he spent time working in a pet shop and realized, among other things, that pet products are good business. Although the company he joined in 1998 was well established, it had no exports. Today, the firm develops, produces and distributes pet food under brand names such as Brit, Brit Care and Astor, supplying a fifty-member team in 45 countries worldwide. Outside the Czech Republic, the firm is most successful in France, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, while its most competitive market is the USA. Mr. Bouška sees tremendous growth potential in Eastern Europe, especially Russia, where the firm is building a new plant, but also wants to achieve significant sales growth in Germany, Great Britain and South Asia. The company’s most important know-how is its years of good practice in the dog and cat food business. The professionals in charge of product quality are breeders and lovers of our four-legged friends, and so truly understand their needs. VAFA pet foods are not, and never will be, tested on laboratory animals. And what is a successful entrepreneur, in the opinion of Pavel Bouška? It’s a free man with the potential to turn his ideas into reality. The ability to achieve self-actualisation is very important to Mr. Bouška, as are responsibility and one’s impact on one’s surroundings. Mr. Bouška splits his free time between his family (two small children) and his passion – snowboarding.

Miloslav Pavlas KOVOLIS Hedvikov a.s.
When Miloslav Pavlas entered the workforce in 1974 at a company then called ZTS, there was no way he could suspect that a part of the company would be privatised 18 years later. His company has a long history; it dates back to the year 1816 and the founding of an ironworks. Since 1992, KOVOLIS HEDVIKOV has been a family firm backed by Czech capital. Its sole owners are two families – the Pavlas and the Koudelkas. The joint stock company was established in 1996 and today has nearly 550 employees and annual production in excess of 5,000 manufactured tons. A leader among commercial foundries in the Czech Republic, the firm supplies, among other customers, Wabco, Honeywell, Peugeot and Volkswagen group. According to Mr. Pavlas, 90% of production is sold on the European market and the remainder in the USA, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, China and India. A new foundry was recently put into operation and Mr. Pavlas would like to see more plants built in Europe. The key item in the production portfolio is machined castings for the automotive industry, a sector where the situation is far from easy during times of economic crisis. Still, there is potential for growth, which Mr. Pavlas primarily sees happening in new technologies and materials. The company also cooperates with technical colleges and Czech Technical University. Mr. Pavlas’ wife, son and daughter all work for the company, and he considers their involvement a good thing, while admitting that as a result, work has a greater impact on his family life. Skiing and Sudoku are his preferred pastimes, and spending time with his grandchildren is his greatest source of relaxation.

Kamil Vacek – TCCM s.r.o.

Kamil Vacek went into business in 1996 when he opened a student shop selling mobile phones in Prague. The business took off. It was one of the first companies to represent several international brands, and after a while (in 2000) Mr. Vacek managed to establish the wholesaler GSM partner, the largest of its kind in the CR. Two years later, the company was completely destroyed by flooding, and Mr. Vacek was forced to start over. He went to work for Samsung and, in his words, is grateful for the experience, as it enabled him to become familiar with operations in an international Asian firm. The turning point came when he was offered the opportunity to develop HTC brand sales in the Czech Republic in 2007. Today, the company TCCM, headquartered in Prague, represents HTC – a star in the world of smart phones – in 20 central and eastern European countries. Mr. Vacek stresses respect for local markets, an individualized approach and daily contact with customers. He considers TCCM a family firm in a global business; his team comprises 50 individuals of fourteen nationalities in 13 capitals in Central and Eastern Europe. When it comes to future expansion, he wants to focus on Ukraine and Azerbaijan. In 2012, he would like to introduce the successful American brand Beats By Dr. Dre (of which HTC owns 51%) onto the Eastern European market. Many women work for TCCM – one reason Mr. Vacek relies on them is because, in keeping with the HTC slogan Quietly brilliant, good team relations and job satisfaction are very important to them. He believes in Darwin’s theory that he who is most adaptable, not strongest or most powerful, wins. Mr. Vacek considers his StartUp of the Year competition for student start-ups as his hobby. He unwinds mainly by spending time with his children, travelling, swimming and trekking in the High Tatras, which he also visits annually for employee teambuilding.

Profiles

Jaroslav Zeman – DETOA Albrechtice s.r.o.

Jaroslav Zeman started work at TOFA Albrechtice (today DETOA Albrechtice) in 1984. At the time, TOFA primarily engaged in the production of upright and grand piano mechanisms, with the manufacture of toys and wooden beads as a sideline. The state enterprise’s original management team wanted to sell the factory to a German competitor, which wanted to turn it into a production operation with no in-house development, sales or management. This led Mr. Zeman to submit a competing project and reverse the entire plan. At the time, the factory was completely tapped out and on the verge of bankruptcy. Nonetheless, production was launched and in late 1999/early 2000 the firm once again started to prosper. In addition to the production of upright piano mechanisms, wood toy production made great strides. The years 2005 – 2007 brought another difficult period, when Chinese companies wiped out traditional upright and grand piano production in Europe. A number of DETOA customers went bankrupt, and today the company’s only stable European customer is PETROF Hradec Králové. A sharp drop in income from upright piano mechanisms forced the firm to step up sales of toys and beads. Today, production is successfully combined with a creative workshop and café, a museum and excursions. In 2011, the production plant had more than 16 000 visitors. Aside from factory production, where Mr. Zeman is banking mainly on wooden toys and board game pieces, he primarily sees the future of the business in tourism. A project to expand the existing Špičák ski area is being prepared, and should make it home to the largest ski area in the Czech Republic. Mr. Zeman is serving his second term as mayor of the town of Albrechtice, which he considers a great honour – he appreciates the fact that the local population re-elected him to lead the community. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, cycling and other sports. He is a great patriot of the Jizera Mountains.

Jiří Mencl – SEV Litovel, s.r.o.

Jiří Mencl, founder of the company SEV Litovel, is convinced “the turntable will survive the audio transmission technologies revolution”. While SEV Litovel was only launched in 1999, it actually carries on an electromechanical and electrotechnical tradition that started in Litovel more than 60 years ago with the company then called Tesla Litovel.  SEV Litovel works with the automotive industry and consumer electronics firms and is one of the world’s largest producers of Hi-Fi turntables. Turntables developed and produced for the Austrian company Audio Systems, which sells them in more than 60 countries worldwide under the Pro-Ject name, are the most important product the company manufactures. For the automotive industry, SEV manufactures windshield spray systems and headlight tilting electronics. Other SEV Litovel export products are train parts, rotors, stators and inductors supplied to Germany’s Märklin. The company has some two hundred employees and has won a number of international prizes, including the prestigious award for best turntable for the 2009-2010 season from the international organisation EISA. Mr. Mencl’s chief aim is not rapid expansion, but rather continued forward movement with a focus on innovation and on higher quality and more expensive models. Mr. Mencl enjoys spending his free time actively, mostly cycling and travelling or trekking in the mountains.

Martin Hausenblas Adler Czech, a.s.

Today, the Czech public primarily knows Martin Hausenblas for his strenuous efforts to combat corruption. However, he is also a shareholder of the firm Adler, which sells promotional textiles and has annual turnover of 350 million. As Mr. Hausenblas himself likes to say, the greatest help to him in business was starting from the bottom, when he left his information science studies and supported himself selling Herbalife, learning patience and resilience in overcoming obstacles in the process. Today, Adler is one of the fastest growing manufacturers and importers of promotional textiles in the Czech Republic and beyond. The company can deliver 3.5 million T-shirts in thousands of variations in eleven European countries with 24-hour turnaround. And according to Mr. Hausenblas, this is just the beginning. For him, being an entrepreneur means taking responsibility and surrounding oneself with competent colleagues. Mr. Hausenblas is not only interested in business in the Czech Republic, but also in the nation’s public life, using the platform Podnikamebezkorupce.cz to fight fraud and corruption. He has also set up a fund to help send gifted students abroad. He believes this investment will be returned many times over when these individuals help change the Ústí region for the better. In his free time, Mr. Hausenblas most enjoys travelling and learning about other cultures. He regularly spends a part of the year abroad, mostly in Australia.
