Research Projects

2014 - 2018 Tropical Deforestation and Economic Development.

Description: Tropical deforestation has attracted attention due to accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The proposed research project will contribute to the understanding of the links between deforestation and economic developments by using a combination of theoretical and empirical research methods: 1) The process of economic development in the form of sectorial and spatial shifts, political settings and conservation policies interact with deforestation in important ways, and theoretical models will be formulated to trace out the relevant mechanisms. 2) The hypothesized mechanisms will be tested in the data. By taking advantage of sources of plausibly exogenous variation in economic growth, political settings and conservation policies, the empirical strategy will deal with the main empirical research challenge in the literature; empirical identification of causal effects. The novelty of the empirical approach lies with the use of the spatial dimension, connecting data on forest cover, economic activity (nighttime light), oil wells and administrative boundaries at a high spatial resolution. The empirical research will use Brazilian data. The proposed research project will generate at least three research papers, focusing on: i) structural change, urbanization and deforestation; ii) political institutions and deforestation; conservation policies and deforestation. Given the potential importance of climate change and the significant contribution of tropical deforestation, policy efforts and substantial funds are currently mobilized to reduce tropical deforestation. Our research will inform policy by highlighting key trade-offs involved in preserving tropical forest and how such trade-offs depend on the economics of other activities

2013 - 2018 "FATE-Amazônia" (Fire-Associated Transient Emissions)

Description: A multidisciplinary methodology was proposed based on remote sensing techniques, forest ecology and ecosystem modeling to produce the first systematic quantification of annual carbon emissions from Amazon forests affected by fire. This general objective will be pursued through the consolidation of a multidisciplinary research team coordinated by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), which developed the FATE- Amazon system. This unique system combined the state-of-the-art methodologies and technologies to map, monitor and quantify the short, medium and long term carbon emissions from Amazonian understory fires.

Role: Co-Investigator (Principal Investigator: Dr. Luiz Eduardo Aragão)

Sponsor: Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) / Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA)

2013 - 2018 Refining tropical predictions: a spatially explicit framework for analyzing, quantifying and forecasting fire incidence in Amazonia

Description: The project aims to develop technologies for prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, in particular fires in Amazonia. The objective of the proposal is to create a new routine for predicting fire probabilities in Amazonia using information derived from satellite products and field data. The methodology is based on a Maximum Entropy (Maxent) approach. It will take advantage of the wide range of freely available spatially-explicit products (deforestation, degradation, land cover, fire incidence, rainfall, sea surface temperature) to produce a method that is scientifically relevant for analyzing and predicting fire patterns, but also relevant for policy applications for preventing and mitigating fire problem in Amazonia.

Role: Co-Investigator (Principal Investigator: Dr. Luiz Eduardo Aragão)

Sponsor: Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) / Science without Borders Program
2003 – 2005 Integrating Coarse and Fine Resolution Satellite Data to Monitor Land Cover Change throughout Amazônia. LBA-LC22 Team

Description: This project addresses a key need to accurately monitor land cover change at frequent intervals throughout Amazonia. Spatially-explicit data on land cover dynamics in response to land use change are essential to extrapolate process-level understanding of carbon, nutrient, and trace gas fluxes over the larger region. Currently, monitoring efforts to quantify land cover change based on analysis of Landsat data are time-consuming, laborious, and data-intensive. Estimates from different analyses often yield conflicting results, highlighting differences in land cover definitions and methodologies applied by various researchers. We will develop a nested strategy whereby MODIS data will be analyzed over the entire region to identify the likelihood that land cover change is occurring at a given location. The likelihoods can then be used to identify the Landsat scenes requiring analysis. Scene selection will be implemented through a sampling strategy that accounts for the practicalities of access on the ground. Field observations will be carried out to aid the analysis of the MODIS and Landsat data.

Role: Co-Investigator (Principal Investigator: Dr. Ruth DeFries & Dr. Yosio Edemir Shimabukuro)

Sponsor: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

2003 – 2005 Vegetation and Land Use Monitoring using MODIS data.

Description: This project presents a methodology for the classification and monitoring of forest, savanna and wetland ecosystems, and for detection and classification of natural and anthropogenic changes. The main objectives of this study are to: 1) generate a moderate spatial resolution vegetation map; 2) monitor the phenological changes in vegetation; 3) develop a land-use/land-cover change detection methodology due to deforestation and burning. Different methodologies for vegetation cover classification using AVHRR data and for land-use/land-cover change detection will be adapted to achieve this goals. Expected results includes a vegetation cover map of Mato Grosso State and a methodology for the detection of deforestation and burned areas generated from multispectral and multitemporal MODIS data. This is an important information for planning and management of natural resources in the region.

Sponsor: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)
