Directions: Fill in this guide as you read. We will be using this as a reference tool throughout this unit.

The Diary of Anne Frank – Act II

Reading Guide

Act II – Scene 1 – Anne, Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank, Mr. Kraler, Miep, Margot, Mrs. Van Daan, Peter, Mr. Van Daan, Dussel.

Questions: On your own sheet of paper, answer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Make sure to label the questions Act II- Scene 1 Questions.

  1. How long have they been hiding?

  2. How are the families getting along? Provide at least one example to support your answer.

  3. What conflict is peter facing?

  4. In this scene, Mr. Kraler brings news to the families. What is this news? What was their reaction?

  5. What would you do if you were put in the same position? Explain.

  6. How has the relationship between Peter and Anne changed?

  7. What information do we get from Anne’s Voice at the end of this scene? What does this news mean to the families in hiding?

Act II – Scene 2 – Anne, Margot, Mrs. Frank, Dussel, Mrs. Van Daan, Peter

  1. Anne and Peter have been spending a lot of time together. How has spending time with Anne changed Peter?

  2. If you were in the Franks position, how would you handle Mr. Van Daan? Explain.

  3. What does Mr. Frank mean when he says, “We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.”? Explain.

  4. How does the mood shift during scene 3? Explain.

  1. What is the conflict at the beginning of the scene?

  2. What is the mood in the scene? Provide Examples from the text.

  3. How does Anne stay positive through this ordeal?

  4. This scene never describes what happens to the families. What can we assume happens? Provide evidence from the scene to support your answer.

  1. When is this scene taking place?

  2. How were the families in hiding caught? Where was Miep?

  3. What happened to the families after they left the hiding place?

  4. Mr. Frank says “She puts me to shame”. What does he mean by this? Explain.
