Irony

Dramatic Irony - occurs when the audience or the reader knows something a character does not know.

- Anne Frank is a play with dramatic irony because we know that only Mr. Frank will survive the war, but the characters in The Secret Annex don't know their own fate.
- Anne calling herself a coward after having the nightmare scene 4. Knowing what her fate will be, the reader knows that she is truly brave. Anne saying how she wants to be a famous singer, dancer, etc., she will become famous but it will be for her diary.
- Any time a character talks about what they cannot wait to do once they are out of hiding is a form of dramatic irony because we know that unfortunately they will not live to see the end of the war (i.e. Anne dancing, riding a bike, soaking in a tub, Mrs. Van Daan playing her piano, etc.)
Verbal irony - involves a contrast between what is said or written and what is really meant.

- Mrs. Van Daan warns Mr. Frank that if the war last longer they will be related. Mr. Frank responds, "Mazel tov." Mr. Frank's response is verbal irony because he isn't trying to be rude, but he isn't really passing along his congratulations.
Flashback - interruption in the present action of a plot to show events that happened at an earlier time.

-The play opens with Mr. Frank returning from the war. He opens Anne's diary and begins to read. The play continues as a flashback (Act I, Scene i).

Conflict - when a character struggles with an outside force, which may be another character, society as a whole, or a natural force.
- Man vs. ManThe struggle of getting along with one another while living in hiding.
- Man vs. Society – The Jewish people vs. The Nazis
- Man vs. Self – In scene 4, Anne says that she realizes she is mean and cruel to people (especially her mother and Mr. Dussel), and she knows she should be nicer to everyone. Anne is afraid that if she lets the “good Anne” out that everyone will laugh at her, and that is why she continues to misbehave.
