English translation:
S: The biggest, the most festive holiday number one is…
N: Novruz
S: …is Novruz. The holiday Novruz is on the first day of spring, March 20-21… In Azerbaijan it’s like a New Year… not only in Azerbaijan, but in the whole region. People cook many sweet things, like pakhlava, shekerbura, shorgogal… they make a fire.
N: Jump over the fire.
S: They jump over the fire.
N: Novruz, of course is our biggest holiday. We celebrate Novruz from the first Thursday until the last Thursday with a lot of festivity... the fire is made, because this has stayed over to us from the time of Zoroastrianism… they call it Zoroastrianism… anyways, Novruz is the most ancient holiday and… a fire is made, people jump over the fire and all their problems burn away and disappear in that fire… and also, this is a very loved holiday. Aside from that, of course we have all the religious holidays, Qurban, Ramazan… and also, this has passed on to us even before the time of Islam, it’s called Chila… it’s like in Iran, they say Yalda, it’s a holiday of the coming of winter… the first day of winter… and also the celebration of the coming of the first day of summer. But of course out of all these holidays the most important one is Novruz. Novruz is first and then all of others follow. But we have them too.
S: Then we have a celebration of New Year’s…
N: We have New Year’s, because we have two kinds of… we have… the starting of the year with the coming of spring and also we have this Europeanized… New Year from the West… we also have that. December 31st. We also celebrate that as New Year. We celebrate December 31st, just like it is celebrated in Western countries; the same way… we also have Santa Claus…
S: Santa Claus is called Shakta Baba.
N: We call Santa Claus Shakta Baba
S: Shakta Baba comes, gives presents to children… the tree gets decorated for the children…
N: People decorate the pine tree…
S: This holiday has stayed from the Soviet Union times…
N: …from the Soviet Union… however, however, children walk around to different houses during Novruz
S: That is during Novruz
N: During Novruz… at the time… the children walk around, people give them sweets, children sing songs, we have all that… they walk from door to door, at every door we put hats, inside the hat…
S: Sweets…
N: Somebody opens the door, I mean… the kids knock on the door. Then, someone puts sweets inside that hat. And also, of course, there are other things… when you hear the first voice, do you remember? You listen to the door… to the kind of noises that come… there are many traditions connected to Novruz… water… looking into the water…
S: Samani
N: looking into the water… Samani and so on. We have all this. Same goes to Iranian Azerbaijan.
S: Then… for example Women’s Day, March 8 has stayed.
N: That too stayed on from the Soviet Union.
S: Then, May 1 has stayed…
N: We no longer have May 1, don’t have such things.

S: May 9, war days

N: That is from WWII… has stayed on from that time on… all that is…
S: We have all these…
N: Yes, we do. We have… but all these holidays are not that important. The most important one is Novruz. The first one is Novruz. We have May 28th, Republic Day…
S: Heydar Aliyev’s Day.
N: We don’t celebrate all those. May 28th.
M: Do you celebrate that?
N: No. We have them of course, but…
S: It’s a free day from work. It’s a holiday.
N: They are all non-working days.
M: Do the families gather, no? To celebrate?
N: No. There is May 28th, Army Day…
S: We have Army Day.
N: Of course. Also have these new holidays.
