Vol. 19 Issue 10
HONOR – COURAGE – COMMITMENT
COMMANDANT’S MESSAGE
Marines and Associates,
The busy, hectic, fun time of the year is upon us. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball,
Veterans Day Parade, MC Birthday Breakfast in Boerne, Toys for Tots, and other events are in the
works.
Senior Vice Jose Martinez and I attended the Department of Texas, Marine Corps League
Fall Staff Meeting in Zapata, Texas October 6-9. The meetings were informative and the Alamo
Detachment is in good standing. I want to thank our Adjutant Humberto Reyes and our Paymaster
Carlos Espinoza for keeping our "books" in good order. We learned that the National Commandant
of the Marine Corps League desires to visit San Antonio in the near future. Details of his visit will be published as soon as
his visit is confirmed.
As you all know, we will celebrate the 336th Marine Corps Birthday on November 5th at the El Tropicano Hotel.
Our guest of honor is Major General David Garza the Inspector-General of the Marine Corps. The Ball Committee has
done an excellent job preparing for our celebration. We are limiting tickets to 300 seats, if you haven't bought your tickets
now is the time.
The Veterans Day Parade on November 12 is also less than a month away. The Parade Committee headed by
John Rodriguez is working on the final details. We need as many Detachment members as possible to participate. This
will be our first parade in San Antonio in quite a while. This is a good chance to show San Antonio that the Marine Corps
League is well and active in San Antonio. Contact John Rodriguez or any Detachment Staff member if you wish to
participate. I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for their participation.
As I write this letter, the San Antonio Young Marines Unit (SAYM) are preparing to have their first Ball to
celebrate the Young Marines Birthday. I am honored to be a participate in their celebration. Our Detachment members
Albert Salas, his wife Angelique, and Raul Marroquin along with all their SAYM Staff are doing a fantastic job. Raul has
become a master in instructing the SAYM's. If you can believe, a gentle drill instructor. I hope we get good photos for our
next Scuttlebutt.
FYI, due to the downsizing, the Wounded Warrior Marine Detachment at BAMC (now renamed San Antonio
Military Medical Center) is losing their active duty reserves. They will be replaced by active duty Marines. We want to
thank the departing Marines for a good job and welcome the incoming Marines. Semper Fi.
Several Detachment Marines and I were able to attend the graveside services for LCpl Benjamin W. Schmidt KIA.
Please keep our Marines in harm's way and their families in your prayers.
See you at the Detachment meeting October 22nd. Once a Marine always a Marine.
Semper Fi!

DETACHMENT UPDATE
Marines and Associates,
I'm sending this out to bring you up to date on the latest news
and upcoming events. The "busy" season has started, the
Marine Corps Birthday Ball is just around the corner,
November 5, 2011. If you haven't brought you ticket now is the
time. Contact me at this email address or my phone
210.373.3687 or contact Bob Otto at 210.623.4433.
Other items:
If you plan to attend the Marine Corps Birthday Breakfast in
Boerne, please let me know soon. I have to RSVP Don Hamm
asap. The first breakfast served 25 people, last year there 300
people attending, so it is important for Marine Hamm to get a
good count. Don Hamms accepts no donations, we've tried.
The "Breakfast" will be held on November 10th from 0500 to
1100 at the Boerne Convention and Community Center, 820
Adler Road, Boerne, TX. Breakfast is buffet style and includes
hash browns, eggs, bacon, sausage, and SOS plus birthday
cake to go. The RSVP is due today. Hurry!
I have ordered 10 sets of the Sunburst collar ornaments for the
white shirt uniform (short & long sleeve) we use in the
summer. Let me know if you want to buy a set, they are $12
per set.
The Veterans Day Parade committee will meet next Thursday
to complete preparations for our color guard and "float." John
Rodriguez is the chairman of the committee, please let him or
me know asap if you plan to participate. The San Antonio
Young Marine Unit will be joining us at the parade. The
Veterans Day Parade is sponsored by the U.S. Military
Veterans Parade Association of San Antonio. The 12th Annual
Veterans Parade will kickoff at 1200 on November 12th in
downtown San Antonio.
The San Antonio Young Marines (SAYM) are having their
Birthday Ball on October 16 in conjunction with the New
Braunfels Young Marines. Their Ball is at the VFW Post 7110
in New Braunfels. We are very proud of our new SAYM Unit.
Semper Fi!!!
Please attend our upcoming monthly meeting on October 22 at
the Marine Detachment Building in the BAMC (now SAMMC)
base. The meeting starts at 0900. Parking is no longer an
issue. You will recognize the MarDet area, as it has a red
fence with USMC on it. Alamo Detachment needs you
participation.
Semper Fi,
VAVS REPORT
Marine Manuel Zertuche, VA Voluntary Service (VAVS)
representative for the Alamo Detachment, has received an
announcement from our local Audie L. Murphy Division
(ALMD) encouraging our support:
On Friday, November 18, 2011, the VAVS Advisory Committee
will be hosting the 6th Annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale and our
Detachment needs to support this effort.
100% of bake sales proceeds go directly to the Audie L.
Murphy Memorial Veterans Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center
and Fisher House general post funds.
HOW YOUR DONATIONS HELP: Many of the patients of this
rehab center at Audie Murphy have to travel great distances to
receive their care; these veterans and family members with
them are a critical component of their recovery process.
Without the resources they normally have at home, these
veterans and families require assistance with transportation,
can be ped undergarments, warm clothing, bus passes, phone
cards to call loved ones, toiletries and many other basic items.
FELLOW MARINES, JOIN OUR DETACHMENT'S HELP IN
THE FORM OF BAKED GOODS OR CASH DONATIONS TO
BENEFIT THIS MOST WORTHY CAUSE.
The bake sale will take place at the Audie Murphy Medical
Center
(1st Floor)on Friday November 18th,7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Donated bake goods can be dropped off the day before or
early on the morning of the sale at the VAVS Bldg #4 just in
front of the med center. Monetary donations (checks should
be made out to VAVS GPF 7021) can also be dropped off at
the med center or brought to the Marine Corps League, Alamo
Det meeting on October 22nd where Marine Zertuche will
collect the checks. Further info: Manuel's phone: (210) 521-
0602.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OCTOBER MARINES
03 – William J.Boyle, Jr.; 04 – Lee Rux;18 –
Julia DeGrace; 30 – Lorrie Zertuche and
Rudy Trejo.
Watch out for the Witches and vampires on 31
October they can make it bad for you. Good
Luck if you go trick or treating!!!
Don’t forget… to set your clocks back to
Standard time. Don’t be late to your next date.
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR…
At the last meeting we had a discussion and disagreement on
whether we should give members addresses to other
organizations and the privacy law was mentioned. I don’t know
why I didn’t think about it at the time, but the invitation that was
in question has been sent out in the Scuttlebutt to all members
for the last ten years, so there is no need to give our address
list to anyone. Sorry about that. The invitation is on the next
page.
