About Sydney Cooper Senior Smiles

Established in 2001, Sydney Cooper Senior Smiles™ is a Southern California-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that trains, recruits, and educates volunteers of all ages on the needs of the elderly and pairs the volunteer with a senior who would benefit from companionship. All volunteers are trained to recognize and understand age-related disabilities such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, hearing, visual, and mobility impairments. In addition, we provide fun, stimulating activities for residents at our partner senior communities.

We aim to bridge the gap between generations by facilitating and nurturing friendships among people of all ages. We are not only dedicated to enriching the social, mental, and emotional lives of our seniors by offering companionship, but those of our volunteers through their experience.

The Senior Smiles internship program will focus on providing valuable mental and emotional services for elderly communities and expanding various aspects of Senior Smiles as an organization. There will also be a concentration in giving opportunities for interns to learn and gain important skills that are related to the nonprofit industry, health field, psychology, gerontology, and more.

Internship Description

  • Time frame: 6 months (April to September); a minimum of 6-10 hours a week, with much flexibility during examination and break weeks

  • Primary Locations: Westwood, Bel-air, Santa Monica, and Pacific Palisades

  • This is an unpaid internship.

  • Interns will meet as a group with the Director of Volunteer Services on a bi-weekly basis. This time will be devoted to learning through discussion on an appropriate topic (based on a short reading, an experience, open question, etc.) and any updates.

  • As a part of a team, interns will be trained to assist in various Senior Smiles initiatives depending on preference. These include but are not limited to: creating an online presence for Senior Smiles, developing activities, organizing fun events for the elderly community, fundraising, and planning volunteer training, recruitment, and appreciation.

  • After a training session, interns will serve as regular volunteers at elderly care communities, providing companionship and activities to prevent depression, loneliness, and mental disabilities for residents.

Benefits

  • Gain skills necessary to interact and offer companionship to the elderly

  • Gain firsthand experience with age-associated disabilities such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and stroke, as well as hearing, visual, and mobility impairments

  • Gain valuable leadership experience and knowledge in event-planning, volunteer relations, nonprofit organizations, patient interaction, and more

  • Upon successful completion of the internship, receive priority for an official volunteer leadership position at Sydney Cooper Senior Smiles if available

  • A letter of recommendation and/or reference to be requested anytime after successful completion of the internship. Letters will be co-written and signed by the Executive Director and Founder of Sydney Cooper Senior Smiles, who is also an experienced geriatric psychologist.

Great for those who are:

  • Able to work with a team and take initiative after tasks have been assigned

  • Open-minded, big-hearted, responsible, patient, and creative
