Türk kahvesi ve çayı Türkler için çok önemli iki içecek. Türk kahvesini artık herkes biliyor ve tanıyor. Türk kahvesi küçük cezvelerde pişirilir ve küçük fincanlarda içilir. Çünkü çok kuvvetlidir, güçlü bir kahvedir. Ve ayrıca Türk kahvesi bir merasim gibidir. Onu iyi yapabilmek çok önemli bir yetenektir hanımlar için özellikle ve kız istenmeye gidildiğinde mutlaka kahve yapılır. English translation:
Turkish coffee and tea are two important drinks for Turkish people. Everyone knows and recognizes Turkish coffee now. Turkish coffee is cooked in small coffee pots and is drunk in tiny cups. [This is] because it is really strong, it is a really strong coffee. And also [drinking] Turkish coffee is like a ceremony. Making it nicely is an important ability, especially for women, and coffee is most certainly prepared when one goes to ask permission for marriage.
Usually coffee . . . women who don’t have jobs can get together and have morning coffee after breakfast. I mean coffee is also a means for people to socialize in Turkey. And Turkish tea is actually very important. We can grow tea ourselves in the Black Sea region. And we drink tea by brewing it. People don’t like drinking tea in tea bags. Because . . . they prefer tea bags only when they are in a hurry or when they don’t have enough time to brew tea. We usually drink tea by brewing it, and we cook it in something we call a teapot [çaydanlık] that is composed of two parts.
We put tea in the top part of this two-part teapot, and there is water on the bottom part. And when the water is boiled in the bottom part, we pour it into the top part and brew it. And then we wait for the tea to brew, for fifteen, twenty minutes or for about half an hour, after the tea is brewed, we drink it in glasses which have narrow middles. We usually don’t prefer to drink it in mugs because mugs are both too big and also they cool down the tea. We drink it in small and glass glasses so that it doesn’t cool down.
And tea is, at the same time, important because when you visit someone, they would offer you tea. When you go somewhere with you friends, you would sit down and have some time, you would chat for five minutes. I mean tea is also a means for people to socialize as well. And Turkish people usually like drinking tea during the day. Although it is an important component of morning breakfasts, people would drink tea once in a while during the day as well with some intervals. Tea can also be drunk after dinners during cold winter nights.
