Annotated Bibliography

  1. “Our second hypothesis—that among those receiving the standardized intervention fighting-spirits are more apt to improve health behaviors than fatalists—is only partially supported by our findings.”

Anna V. Wilkinson. “Exact health behaviors of standardized vs tailored health messages among cancer survivors enrolled in FRESH START trial: a comparison of fighting-spirits vs fatalists.” Psycho-Oncology 22.1 (2012): 108-113. Web. 12 May 2014.

  • Even though this hypothesis was partially supported it still shows that there is a difference between the two mentalities. Having a mentality other than fatalist can improve an individual’s situation. For example these individuals are in the worst situation: having to go through life having cancer, and they still show improvements with themselves and their health obtaining a mentality other than a fatalist.

  1. “Fatalism can appear as: faith based, opposition to distruct, pride covering poverty, apathy or unwillingness to change, based on ignorance of potential health outcomes, upholding a quality of life.”

Wendy Welch. “Self Control, Fatalism, and Health in Appalachia.” Journal of Appalachian Studies 17.1/2 (2011): 108-122. Web. 12 May 2014.

  • There are many different categories that fit into the description of fatalism but the most common is “apathy or unwillingness to change.” This is the most effect to the population because people chose to stay the same and decide that it is best that way. Change is inevitable and will happen to everyone. No one is the same person they were yesterday, so change happens even when an individual is not trying to maintain the same.

  1. “Transform fatedness into destiny and to gain futures”

  • I believe it is best to change the perspective because it will result in better outcomes. Someone that is guided by fate will not see results because they are obligated to believe that there are no changes to fate because it is already set to happen. They also feel like they can not change or make change happen because it is something outside of their comfort zone.

  1. “Destiny is harder to come by than fate, because it involves the soul’s work-accepting all that we are and acknowledging all we have experienced. We move toward our destiny when we tread the path of individuation, learning from experience; disrupting repetitions and reac-tive patters; loosening defeneses; working through enactments; creating spaces for reflection, play, and the elaboration of our true self/selves.”

  • It takes a lot of hard work to change. It will take a great amount of work from the soul to be able to change one’s mentality into something much better. A mentality change will bring different outcomes and overall make a person happier. Sticking to the mentality of a fatalist will not bring much

  1. “How can these patiens turn their perspectives around so their lives will feel less determined by the traumas of the past and may be inspired more by their as-yet-unrealized potential, their unknown and un-knowable destiny?”

Suzi Naiburg Ph.D. and L.I.C.S.W. (2006) Between Fate and Destiny: Oedipus and Reactive Certainty in the Consulting Room, Psychoanalytic Dialogues: The International Journal of Relational Perspectives, 16:4, 445-463

  1. “Research shows that a key component of happiness is a sense of control over your life. The more you perceive yourself to be in control, the better you feel.”

"Another Important Element of Happiness: Having a Sense of CONTROL over Your Life." The Happiness Project. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 May 2014.

  • What better way to be happy than having control over the things in your life? It is your life so might as well have control. You can do what you please and be happy while doing it. The things that happen in your life will affect you so make sure to have control over your life. The best way to do so is having control over your mentality and the way you think. Changing your perspective is the best way to go!

  1. “But it turns out that exerting self-control can make you happier not only in the long run, but also in the moment.” “Self-control, for one, may not consist so much of being better at resisting temptation, but at finding better ways to avoid it. ‘High self-control does make you happy.’”

  • Having control is the best way to go! Having control will result in all the positive outcomes in one’s life. it will become beneficial and help those that need to change the events in their life and those that feel that they need to be happier.

Szalavitz, Maia, and Maia Szalavitz. "Self-Disciplined People Are Happier (and Not as Deprived as You Think) | TIME.com." Time. Time, n.d. Web. 13 May 2014.

  1. “Influence has the potential to impact. Its indirect. Control has a direct effect on a result.” “Great news is you can make yourself happy by adjusting the beliefs that cause your misery”

  • You have the control to be happy. The only person that will affect you is you. It is important to be happy and this will involve having control. Not an easy task but it can get done. There will be results.

"Be Responsible for What You Feel." Self Creation. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 May 2014.

  1. “No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change.” Barbara de Angelis.

"Barbara De Angelis Quote." BrainyQuote. Xplore, n.d. Web. 13 May 2014

  • Perfect quote! One has the power to do what they want and they will be able to make the changes that are necessary for one to be happy. Over all it is up to that one individual.
