JOB DESCRIPTION
POST Young Person’s Community Counsellor
BASE The Junction, 82-86 Great Junction Street
HOURS Full Time, 35 hours, Flexible including some evenings &

weekends
MANAGEMENT Responsible to Senior Project Worker. Accountable

to Board of Trustees
SALARY Starting salary £25,778

PURPOSE OF JOB

To provide counselling for young people within The Junction’s unique model and engage with young people in the community.


Providing services including health and wellbeing related workshops in schools and partner agencies, street outreach and walk-in appointments will give the post holder the opportunity to build relationships with young people in the community.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The post holder will work as part of the Junction staff team. They will report to The Junction Board of Trustees & funders via the Senior Project Worker.



KEY TASK AREAS:


  • To work within the parameters of The Junction’s agreed polices and promote the ethos, values and objectives of the project.




  • To assess young people’s psychological / emotional needs and deliver appropriate counselling or referral as required.




  • To take a lead in managing the project’s counselling and one-to-one support waiting list.




  • To demonstrate a high standard of knowledge about the needs of young people and to work well in tandem with them responding to their needs.




  • To work in partnership with colleagues towards the development of a peer based approach.




  • To respond appropriately and flexibly to young people’s emotional wellbeing, sexual health and physical wellbeing needs as part of our drop-in and walk-in services.




  • To develop and contribute to relationships with key partner agencies and schools.




  • To contribute to the collection of relevant data and the development and operation of monitoring and evaluation systems.




  • To carry out any other tasks that reasonably fall within the scope of the role.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES





  • To promote and respect client confidentiality at all times within the parameters of child protection.




  • To respond to any concerns regarding neglect or abuse in a sensitive and appropriate manner.




  • To have knowledge of relevant child protection guidelines.




  • To attend staff meetings and training.




  • When appropriate, to refer young people to agencies best placed to meet their needs.




  • To maintain client records in accordance with BACP and Junction guidelines.




  • To provide mentoring/support to volunteers and students working within the organisation as required.


SUPERVISION





  • The post holder will participate in support and supervision with the Senior Project Worker and will report directly to them.




  • The post holder will participate in clinical supervision with the Senior Counsellor.

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Formal Counselling qualification to diploma level or above

  • Relevant professional qualification e.g. Community Education, Social Work, Health Promotion, Nursing or Teaching




  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

EXPERIENCE



  • Experience of counselling work with young people




  • Experience of assessing the needs of young people




  • Experience in providing high quality training material & resources




  • Previous experience of working with schools.




  • Experience working within a peer based model

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Sound understanding of issues affecting young people




  • Awareness of inequalities




  • Group work







  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills




  • Ability to innovate & use a range of approaches




  • Delivery of training




  • Presentation skills




  • Research skills




  • An understanding of the principles of monitoring & evaluation




  • An understanding of local

  • & national strategies, including GIRFEC




  • Knowledge of local agencies
