"To relieve the injured and the oppressed; to succor [help] the suffering and unfortunate, especially widows and orphans."

Houston Chronical editorial September 1921

Boys you’d better disband. You’d better take your sheets, your banners, your masks, your regalia, and make one fine bonfire. Without pausing to argue over object you have in mind, it is sufficient to say that your methods are hopelessly wrong. Every tradition of social progress is against you. You are opposed to every principal on which this Governemnt is founded. You are out of keeping with civilized life.

Reviving the Ku Klux Klan; Walter F White; The Forum, April 1921

But what, many ask, is behind the attempt to establish this movement in the North? The answer is easy. Drawn on the one hand into the North during the war by industrial opportunity, and driven out of the South on the other hand by oppressive conditions there. As a result, the South has felt keenly the losing of this labor and suffered heavy financial losses. Among a small percentage of Southern employers there is a realization that the old order of Negro oppression has passed and definite steps are being taken to eradicated some of the evils. But, unfortunately, there is a larger element which still holds to the doctrine of “keeping the nigger in his place.”
The Ku Klux Klan, by spreading it’s propaganda in Northern Industrial centers, seeks to oust Negroes from employment, thinking that they will be forced to return to the South. Having served American faithfully during the War, and with the prospect of a tide in immigration from Europe furnishing a great mass of cheap labor for Northern industries, Negroes are to be driven by unemployment and starvation back to the land of lynchings.

Lesson Extension
Answer one of the following questions in a well-constructed paragraph. A paragraph does not have a particular number of sentence but I will not accept pages longer than 2 pages in length (double spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins) PAPERS ARE DUE FRIDAY FEB 5th. I WILL BE IN CLASS THEN TO COLLECT!
Papers will be graded on four criteria*
* Taken from UCB History 7a paper requirements.

  1. Thesis: Does the paper clearly answer the chosen question? Is the entire paper built around answering the central question? Do sub-points, evidence and analytical relevance build logically upon one another?

  2. Structure: Is the paper structured logically and effectively? Are there effective transitions from one piece of evidence to another? Does the introduction succinctly provide the necessary context for the paper? Does the conclusion reinforce the overall argument? Though it may not seem like it, 1 single paragraph (NO MORE THAN 2 pages double spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins) is a short amount of space within which to discuss the topics below. Your grade will depend in part on how effectively you use the limited space available to you – don’t ramble, don’t waste time on generalities, don’t over-contextualize basic information, don’t be repetitive. Be as concise as possible without sacrificing detail.

  3. Sources: Does the author use sources effectively? Does the paper reflect a deep familiarity with the sources? Have the most pertinent and compelling examples and evidence been chosen? Are citations given when needed and in the appropriate form?

  4. Style: Is the paper free from spelling and grammatical errors? Is it written well?

Question 1: In what ways does the Ku Klux Klan represent the American identity of the 1920s? You can use, but are not limited to the sources discussed in class.

Question 2: In what ways are the arguments of the Ku Klux Klan reflected in our modern political era? Use the 2016 Presidential Election as the topical evidence for your Thesis.
