The Son of David - Week 14

1 Kings - Something Greater - Part 1

1. Before the Video - In 1 Kings 2:1-4 we read the instructions David gave to Solomon for ruling as king over Israel as well as a description of the blessings Solomon would enjoy if he ruled this way. What are the key things David told Solomon to do, and what could he expect if he did these things?

2. Solomon’s Wisdom

First Kings begins with the death of King David in the time before the temple was built in Jerusalem. Solomon has taken his place on the throne. In chapter 3 we read that Solomon has gone to Gibeon, where the tabernacle has come to rest, to offer sacrifices. And their God came down to open up the world to him.

A) Read 1 Kings 3:1-3. We can see right away that the writer of 1 Kings is not going to whitewash Solomon’s story. Here at the outset we see that Solomon is a mix of good and bad (just as we are). What do you see here that bodes well for the future of his reign as king, and what causes concern?

B) Read 1 Kings 3:4-9. What do you see about how Solomon sees himself and what he desires?

C) Read 1 Kings 3:10-15. How did God respond to Solomon’s request?

D) Read 1 Kings 3:16-29. How does this story of the two prostitutes who come before Solomon illustrate that God has indeed given Solomon what he asked for?macintosh hd:users:grecenike:documents:stadium village:wisdom of solomon.jpg

E) Read 1 Kings 4:20-34. Solomon had expressed concern that he did not have the ability to govern God’s people. But what are the signs that God has given him the wisdom to do so? In addition to wisdom for governing, in what other manners was Solomon given wisdom?

5. The Queen of Sheba

  1. Read 1 Kings 10:1-13. The queen of Sheba came to test Solomon with hard questions. Use your imagination for a minute and list 3 or 4 questions you think she might have asked him?

  1. The queen of Sheba was breathless and amazed by the wisdom of Solomon as well as by the temple he had built, the government he had organized the food he served, and the way he worshiped. What did she do in response, according to verses 9-10?

  1. Read Matthew 12:42 in light of the account in 1 Kings 10 of the queen of Sheba’s response to Solomon and his God. What was Jesus saying in regard to why the queen of Sheba will “rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it”?

6. Solomon’s Wealth

Read 1 Kings 10:14-18, 21. First kings makes it clear that Solomon was the wisest man in the world and the richest man in the world and had more honor than any king in the world in his day. And Jesus announced “something greater than Solomon is hear.” (Matt 12:42) How would you explain what he meant?macintosh hd:users:grecenike:documents:stadium village:king-solomon-throne.jpg
