The Story of Robin Hood

Robin Hood is England's most famous outlaw, a hero who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. There are many versions of the tale of Robin Hood, although most versions reflect that he was a Saxon noble who lived near the castle of Nottingham. By various means he was forced into a life of banditry and used his cunning and skill-at-arms in archery to relieve bishops, nobles, and servants of the king of gold and jewels levied from the oppressed peasants.

Robin collected a band of supporters, his "Merry Men" around him, which also included Maid Marian, Little John, and Friar Tuck. Robin spent his time fighting the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham and King John, who had usurped the throne from the rightful King, Richard I, who was away at the Crusades. Robin Hood opposed the high taxes King John imposed on the English population and was declared an outlaw.

The story of how Robin Hood became a bandit varies. In some versions, he is the teenaged heir to a large estate held in safe-keeping by the Sheriff of Nottingham until his 17th birthday. The Sheriff conspires to trick him out of his inheritance by having a green-fletched arrow, of the type only Robin Hood used, shot near a visiting dignitary at a fair. Robin is accused of attempted murder, outlawed, and his lands repossessed by the Sheriff.

Another version has Robin Hood as the son of a Saxon who openly flouted Norman authority. After Norman men-at-arms arrive to arrest Robin's father for treason, a fight ensues and the family's Great Hall was burned and Robin's father killed. Robin is then forced to carry on his father's war against the Normans and fled to Sherwood Forest with his Merry Men.

Yet another version identifies Robin Hood as a Crusader who returned to England to find his father had been killed and the family lands possessed, forcing Robin into a life of banditry. Ultimately, King Richard I returned to England and pardoned Robin Hood and his outlaws.

Whatever the true story of Robin Hood is, he remains today a popular character in books and films.
