Page 81: My Hero!
Before students complete this page, engage them in a discussion of why they
admire some people. List the characteristics and qualities mentioned on the
chalkboard. Make the point that a person doesn’t have to be rich or famous to
be admired. In fact, many rich and famous people aren’t particularly admirable
at all. After students complete the page, invite them to share their lists with the
class.
Page 82: The Sports Hall of Fame
Ask students if they think that sports figures have an obligation to be good role
models as well as outstanding athletes. Then discuss which sports figures stu-
dents feel are good role models.
Page 83: Fact or Opinion?
Follow up this activity by asking students to analyze a news article to determine
which statements are facts and which are opinions. Explain beforehand that a
news article should contain facts which can be substantiated, whereas an edito-
rial includes the opinion of the editors.
Page 84: Space, the Final Frontier
Invite students to share their completed planning forms. Discuss the skills and
qualities students identified for their crew members. Encourage students to
explain their thinking.
Page 85: Twins?
After students complete this activity, discuss how they might use these compar-
isons in metaphors and similes. Give an example such as
