2 0 0 6 - Bigger 

and Better 

T

his  s u m m e r ' s Robert College  S u m m e r  C a m p was a  c a m p of many firsts and 

many  i m p r o v e m e n t s .  " O d y s s e y of the  S e n s e s : The World  A w a i t s " , the camp's 

central theme, took  c a m p e r s on a journey through five different climates and 

c h a l l e n g e d  c a m p e r s to use their five  s e n s e s as never before. 

O v e r  3 7 5  y o u n g people, a record enrollment, enjoyed the many activities, 

excursions and classic  R C S C events, including  " C r e a t i v e  P r o b l e m  S o l v i n g " ,  " C a r n i v a l 

D a y " ,  " S t a d i u m  D a y " , a trip to  B U R C  B e a c h and the first ever  R C S C "IN-T.E.N.S.E 

fest".  O t h e r new facets of the  c a m p were the  R C S C Bank and Trading Post, where 

c a m p e r s had to use their English in order to do their banking and  s h o p p i n g . Each 

c a m p e r had a  " C a m p  P a s s p o r t " in which they collected  s t a m p s for using their 

English and contributing positively to the  c a m p . 

C a m p e r s also were able to give back to the  c o m m u n i t y through the new 

" C o m m u n i t y  S e r v i c e  P r o g r a m " . They helped beautify Kuruçeşme Park and painted a 

mural at the Beşiktaş işitme Engelliler Eğitim ve Kültür Derneği (Beşiktaş 

A s s o c i a t i o n for the Hearing Impaired).  C a m p e r s can be  s e e n here at the Kuruçeşme 

Park selling  h o m e m a d e  c o o k i e s and  l e m o n a d e to raise funds and  a w a r e n e s s of the 

Dernek.  R C S C 06 was the most  s u c c e s s f u l ever and plans are already underway for 

an even better  R C S C  ' 0 7 ! 

Bürge Abiral, Lise 12

Vote for Girl Power 

F

or the first time in many years, the Robert College Student Council is to 

be run by a female, Bürge  A b i r a l , Lise 12. She was first elected to the SC 

as one of four class reps in  9 t h grade and at the end of 10th grade was 

elected secretary. At the end of 11th grade she decided to run for president 

against one other candidate, who was SC treasurer at the time.  " H e was a 

really strong candidate both because of his  s u c c e s s f u l work with the SC and 

because he is a boarder," she says. 

Bürge says she has her friends to thank for her  s u c c e s s .  " S o m e  c a m e to 

s c h o o l to poster the walls, others prepared new posters without my even 

asking  t h e m , others lobbied on my behalf, introducing me to students who 

might not know me." 

" A n y o n e who stands as a candidate for office in the SC cannot really say 

things like 'I will do this!' or 'I promise that!' because the SC is always a 

team effort, its never just about one person," she points out. This year,  S C ' s 

goals include more actively contributing to the  s c h o o l administration, 

expanding the annual Fine  A r t s Festival and improving  s u p p o r t  s y s t e m s for 

student projects.

Oya Nuzumlalı,RC 02 

| Y o u n g Graduates 

on Board for RC 

Advancement 

RC is fortunate to have recruited two recent graduates to 

expand the  A l u m n i &  D e v e l o p m e n t  P r o g r a m in Turkey and the 

U S A . 

Oya  N u z u m l a h , RC  0 2 , studied Cognitive  S c i e n c e and 

Theater at  D a r t m o u t h College, graduating in  2 0 0 6 . She spent 

her college years hanging out by an MR  m a c h i n e  1 0 0 , 0 0 0 

times  s t r o n g e r than Earth's  m a g n e t i c field,  s w i m m i n g in the 

river, going on hikes in the upper valley,  s p e n d i n g nights in the 

cabin, watching the aurora borealis, and mastering the art of 

sleeping in sleeping bags, quite different from the life she 

leads in Istanbul. After college she  d e s c e n d e d from the black 

m o u n t a i n s and red foliage into the rambling city of Istanbul, 

and  w o r k e d in the Robert College  S u m m e r  C a m p as a 

counselor. 

Oya's new job has her working for the Robert College 

A l u m n i & Development effort as of  S e p t e m b e r  2 0 0 6 . She will 

be the first RC graduate ever to work for RC in the New York 

Office of the Board of Trustees, and hopes to meet with many 

alumni in the  U S . 

A n o t h e r new arrival on board at RC is Mehveş Dramur 

Yardımcı, RC  9 6 . Her expertise in new media  t e c h n o l o g i e s 

will be an additional  s t r e n g t h in the  A l u m n i & Development 

Office in Istanbul. An avid sailing fan like  O y a , Mehveş studied 

M a n a g e m e n t Information  S y s t e m s in  G e r m a n at  M a r m a r a 

University. She worked in marketing high-tech services, 

including localization, 3-D  a n i m a t i o n and mobile  m a r k e t i n g for 

several years. Like  O y a , Mehveş also worked in the Robert 

College  S u m m e r  C a m p , both as a  c o u n s e l o r and the assistant 

director. Mehveş loves animals, and all things related to the 

sea and she has recently started  w i n d s u r f i n g .  S h e hopes to 

sail around the world one day and buy a  m o t o r c y c l e . Mehveş is 

happily  m a r r i e d to Kerim Yardımcı,  a n o t h e r sea-lover, and they 

have a 2-year-old  S i a m e s e cat, Yoda, who hopefully will 

a c c o m p a n y the couple in their trip  a r o u n d the world as the 

deck girl. 

RC  w e l c o m e s Mehveş and  O y a . Their talents and passion for 

their  A l m a Mater is bound to  s e r v e the RC  c o m m u n i t y well.
