What is Pascal’s law?

  • Pascal’s law establishes the relation between pressure and the height of static fluids.
  • According to Pascal's law, pressure applied anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is spread equally in all directions throughout the fluid.
  • the law was first described in 1653 by French mathematician Blaise Pascal written in his book- The Physical Treatises of Pascal.

Formulas of the Pascal’s law

  • Acc
  • rding to Pascal's law, pressure is equal to the ratio of the applied force by the surface area: p= P/A
  • Let us consider an object in a liquid. if the pressures on the top and bottom of the object are p2 and p1 respectively, the pressure difference would be equal to:
  • p1-p2=mg/A=ρgh

4

Explanation of the Pascal’s law

  • Hydraulic press- since pressure inside the closed system remains constant, this formula is true for a hydraulic press: p1=p2 P2/A2=P1/A1 and F1*d1=F2*d2
  • Object in a liquid- let’s say that we have a prism abcdef in a liquid. Forces acting on the prism P1, P2, P3 are equal to:
  • P1 = p1 x ad P2 = p2 x bd P3 = p3 x cd
  • The net force on the prism will be zero since the prism is in equilibrium.

    F1 sin θ = F2 F1 cos θ = F3 P1 ad b/a = P2*bd P1 ad c/a = P3*cd

    (eq 1) (eq 2)

    From 1 and 2 P1 = P2 and P1 = P3

Application of the Pascal’s law Hydraulic press

  • Hydraulic press is a tool used to mold, bend, shape materials, like wood, metal.
  • Hydraulic press consists of a pump, providing pressure with incompressible liquid to piston through pipe.
  • Hydraulic press is among the most used tool that works by Pascal’s law

6

Hydraulic systems

  • Hydraulic jack is a tool (a jack that uses hydraulics) Used to lift heavy objects, like cars, mobile homes etc.
  • Its working principle is similar to the hydraulic press- through the handle, small piston pushes liquid, giving pressure and pushing the large piston.

7

Hydraulic lift

  • Hydraulic lift is a tool that is used for lifting heavy objects upwards.
  • Its mechanism is very similar to hydraulic press- it uses hydraulic liquid to move pressure from the reservoir to the piston.
