Substance can be a liquid, a solid, or gas. W ater can change into three forms. It only depends
on water temperature. W hen water is a liquid, we drink it. W hen water is cold, it is a solid, such
as ice or snow. W hen water is a gas, we call it water vapour. W hen water boils, it changes into
vapour or steam. The water vapour is collected in clouds. Then it falls to the ground as rain or
snow. Some people think that the amount o f water changes when the water m oves from one state
to another. Actually the amount of water always stays the same, no matter
which state the water
is in. People are tricked because o f the amount o f space which water uses in its different forms.
Solid form takes up more space than liquid form. Vapour form takes up the least am ount o f space.

The force that pulls things towards the ground is called gravity. Gravity is som ething that
you can’t see or touch. Isaac Newton named this force as “gravity” after he watched an apple fall
from a tree. He noticed that things always fell down. They never went up. Later he figured out
the important role that gravity played on the Earth. M oon’s gravity makes the tides change in
the oceans. Gravity keeps the Earth’s atmosphere from flying o ff into space. T h e atmosphere is
what gives us weather. Without it, the Earth would have no weather at all. G ravity also keeps
us from flying o ff into space. It also makes the Earth go round the Sun. A n d it keeps the M oon
going around the Earth. O f course, the Earth never touches the moon.

weather change

falls from a tree in the
garden
C) The notion o f gravity and its importance

sky

C ) the M oon
D) space
9 5 . According to the passage, you can tell
that ... .
A) gravity deals only with apples in the garden
B) gravity makes the Earth touch the moon
C) gravity has nothing to do with
the weather
D) gravity is important to the weather

Thunderstorms are very common. Thunder and lightning happen at the same, but you see
the lightning first because light travels faster than sound. Many people who live by oceans have
seen hurricanes. Very strong winds, heavy rain and waves cause hurricanes. Hurricanes are given
names like Andrew or Hugo. They can cause floods and a lot o f damage. The most violent storms
are tornadoes. They
can carry things such as dirt, leaves and other objects up to the sky. The
wind in a tornado spins at a speed of 640 kilometres per hour or more. Tornadoes cause a lot of
damage to things in their way. Blizzards are dangerous snowstorms. They have heavy snow and
strong winds. Sometimes when there is a blizzard, schools close and power goes out.
