W ith wings that can stretch to almost three metres long, the California condor is the largest 
flying bird found in America. The huge condor is mostly black with big white wing patterns. It 
has no feathers on its head. It is a scavenger, which means it eats dead animals. Unlike its close 
relative, the vulture, which is rare, the California condor finds food by sight rather than by smell. 
The California condor is also an endangered bird. This means it is rare and needs help to survive. 
These birds became rare because the dead animals they feed on often contain lead, a kind of 
metal, which is dangerous for the birds. Today, there are only about 230 California condors left 
in the wild. Scientists are working hard to make sure these birds survive.

Ice cream has been available for thousands o f years. It was nothing like m odern ice cream in 
its very early history. In fact, the early ice cream was only snow m ixed with honey and fruit. As 
time went on, ice cream becam e more like it is today. W ith the help o f new technologies such 
as electricity, the freezer and the fridge, ice cream becam e much easier to make. In 1904, an ice 
cream salesman at the W orld’s Fair used a waffle to hold ice cream from running out. Thus, the 
ice cream waffle was invented. Then after a year, new ice cream products like the sundae and 
ice cream soda were invented. Today people know a lot o f ice cream flavours.

These days many people often eat convenient food. This means food which is already prepared, 
in packets or cans, or often frozen. This type of food is considered dangerous as it often contains 
a lot o f fat or sugar. If people eat a lot of sugar, people might get holes in their teeth. Similarly, 
if people eat a lot o f fat, this is bad for their hearts. The best food is fresh, natural food such as 
fruit and vegetables. Instead o f frying food in fat, people should boil it or eat it raw, as in salads. 
Food which has been boiled often contains many vitamins. These vitam ins are often destroyed 
in the process o f cooking.
