Vampire bats may seem threatening, but these small animals aren’t as terrifying as their name
suggests. In fact, they do not do harm to humans, but they can even help humans live longer.
You may be surprised to hear that vampire bats don’t actually suck blood. Instead, they stick an
animal with their two front teeth and lick the blood from the cut. A chemical in the bat’s saliva,
liquid in the mouth, prevents blood from being thick. This allows the bat to feed without causing
pain to its victim or even waking it up. The vampire bat takes only about two tablespoons of
blood at a time. Vampire bats are sweet, gentle creatures that live together in groups. Like good
neighbours, vampire bats are willing to share their meals with each other during hard times. It
seems that these gentle creatures live for the good of the group. Scientists
have studied ways to
use the chemical in the saliva to break up thick blood in people who have had a heart attack.
The very same saliva helped to save human lives.
