Pen Tool Mandala Criteria

Project Description:
Using only the Pen Tool, Ellipse Tool, Line Tool, the Fill and Stroke processes, each student will create a body of work that demonstrates an understanding of radial symmetry and abstract design.

Your Project Must…

Be created entirely in the Photoshop program – no outside images may be used

The only permitted tools are: The Pen Tool, Ellipse Tool, Line Tool

Demonstrate a sophisticated use of the Pen Tool to create solid shapes and evenly stroked lines

The lines may only exist in the final image as negative spaces – the line layer must be hidden or deleted before the image is saved as a jpeg

Consist of a minimum of 5 radially symmetrical mandala designs

Mandalas must have a minimum of 6 colors

Mandalas may only feature abstract (non-representational) designs

Demonstrate a good use of space

Mandalas must take up the majority of the canvas without going off any edges

Mandalas must be centered

Designs within the mandala must be of adequate complexity – the original ‘slice’ should have at least 5 distinct paths used to create the shape
