We have been running “Minute to Win It”
challenges each Thursday morning with our middle
school students. For September, out overall winner
was our 7th grade winning the most challenges over
the month to win Root Beer floats for their classroom.
Our 6th grade came in 2nd place. The challenges
will continue on into the month of October, but the
challenge field is anew. In the pictures we had our 7th
grade class as our winners and in the other two our
students completing the challenge.

At 7:30 a.m. on the morning
of September 15, 2018, over
50 volunteers eagerly set up for
the Fourth Annual Larry Sand
Memorial Youth Outdoor Event.
This program was put together in
order to get more children exposed
to the many different activities that
can be done in the outdoors.
The day’s activities started
with participants getting broken
down into ten groups that where
guided to the stations by volunteers.
After getting in their groups the
kids participated in twelve different
stations that consisted of fishing,
bio diversity, archery, Boy Scout
camping activities, muzzleloader
shooting, shotgun shooting, .22 rifle
shooting, large bore rifle shooting
(.223 and .243 caliber rifles), sling
shot and .22 pistol shooting, ATV
/ Snowmobile safety, trapping and
working dogs.
During the fishing station the
kids fished for about 25 minutes
of their day. The fish did not seem
like they wanted to cooperate this
year and only three catfish took the
bait, unfortunately it was at a time
the kids were not at the station
or having lunch. The volunteer
crew that helped with that station
showed the kids how to clean their

important to birds. The kids the n
got to take those houses home to
put up in their yards.
The boys and leaders of Boy
Scout Troop #35 of Sisseton ran a
station showing kids how to set up
a camp site, start a camp fire and
make S’mores.
During the shooting portion
of the day the kids got to shoot
muzzleloaders at metal targets. Each
participant shot between three to
four rounds of muzzleloader.
The archery station participants
shot tons of arrows at targets.
Targets were bullseye type or 3-D
animal style targets.
The shotgun station
participants shot a couple of rounds
of trap. The volunteers helped teach
the kids proper shooting techniques.
During the rifle station the
participants got to shoot .22 rifles at
metal targets of various animals.
In the large bore rifle station
each participant also got to shoot
a .243 caliber rifle, a Mini-14 .223
caliber rifle and a AR-15 .223
caliber rifle at metal targets.
During the Sling shot and
.22 pistol station kids got to
experience an “old School” source
of entertainment in learning how to
hit pop can targets with a sling shot.
In that same station the kids got to
shoot at bullseye targets with a .22
pistol.
Kids learned proper safety
equipment and proper riding
techniques for ATV’s, UTV’S and
snowmobiles from the members of
the North-east Trail Blazers.
During the trapping station
kids learned where animal would
live in the wild by taking a nature
walk. During the walk the kids
learned about animal signs, tracks
and scat along the way.
At the working dog station
Kylee Shotkoski taught the kids how
to train a hunting dog and what
the dog would do while out in the
field hunting. Kids were also showed
what drugs and apprehension dogs
do for the local police departments.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol,
Roberts County Sheriff’s Office and
the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribal
Police Department helped with that
station as well.
The kids received a hay wagon
ride to their next station thanks to
the Hanson Family for letting us
borrow your wagon.
The kids were served barbeque
(donated by Deano’s, Dakota Line
Lodge and Lake Traverse Resort)
and potato chips (donated by K&K,
Cross Roads C-Store and Cenex of
Browns Valley) for dinner.
The kids at the beginning of
the day were handed out a tee shirt.
At the end of the day the kids had
their names entered to win different
door prizes.

cast fishing poles while playing a
backyard bass game.
The Bio Diversity station the
volunteers showed kids the different
amphibians and reptiles we have in
this area.
The kids got to learn how
to build a bird house, as well and
learned what kind of birds used that
type of house and why houses are
