Height Histogram Activity

Math 7.11-

The student, given data for a practical situation, will

a) construct and analyze histograms; and

b) compare and contrast histograms with other types of graphs presenting information from the same data set

Objective: Without error, the classes will construct a histogram displaying the heights of all of Mr. Julien’s students.

Materials:

Procedure

  1. (Prior to Activity) Draw the following frequency chart on whiteboard for students to record/modify data throughout the day. Be sure it’s large enough to fit all student data.

Height

Tally

Frequency

Cumulative Frequency

4’ 6” - 4’ 8”

4’ 9” - 4’ 11”

5’ - 5’ 2”

5’ 3” – 5’ 5”

5’ 6” – 5’ 8”

5’ 9” – 5’ 11”

6’ – 6’ 2”

Also, use a large piece of colored paper to provide the pre-labeled X (intervals) and Y (quantity of students per interval) axes. This is where students will place post-it’s to build bars of histogram.

  1. Working in pair, students will measure each other in standard units using either yard sticks or measuring tape. Each student will record their name and individual height on a post- it (each student will have their own post it).

  2. Each student will add a tally to the frequency chart and update the frequency for their given interval. (NOTE: To avoid confusion, keep the Cumulative Frequency column untouched until all students in the block have recorded their specific data. Once all data is collected for the period the Cumulate Frequency column can be updated)

  3. After the students have recorded their specific data on the frequency chart (tally mark and updated frequency for that interval) they will glue their post-it to the provided X-axis in the appropriate place (the post-its will create the bars of the histogram)

Assessment: The next day (after completion of the histogram), provide the following questions to analyze the histogram. Each student will answer individually and turn in for comprehension ( >75% correct).

  1. What does this graph help us analyze?

  2. What height interval is the mode for the height of Mr. Julien’s 7th graders?

  3. What is the cumulative frequency for this data?

  4. The interval with the least students in it was _______.

  5. How many students are between 4’ 6” and 5’ 2” tall?

  6. How many students are taller than 5’ 5”?

  7. How many 7th graders are shorter than 6’ 2”?

  8. Draw another type of graph to represent this data.
