What are Homophones?

  • Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and often different spellings. Even though they have similar pronunciations, they may have entirely distinct definitions.

Examples of common homophones

  • "Their" - shows possession by a group of people
  • "They're" - contraction of "they are"
  • "To" - expresses direction or movement
  • "Two" - the number 2
  • "Too" - signifies also or excessive
  • "Your" - shows possession or ownership (second person)
  • "You're" - contraction of "you are"
  • "Flour" - a white powdery substance used in baking
  • "Flower" - a plant reproductive structure
  • "Hear" - to perceive sound with your ears
  • "Here" - refers to a particular location

Homephones in sentence

  • Here's an example of a sentence that includes homophones:
  • "I need to buy two tickets to the concert because my friend wants to go too."
  • In this sentence, we have the homophones "two" and "too." "Two" refers to the number 2, indicating that the speaker needs to purchase two tickets. "Too" is used to show that the speaker's friend also wants to attend the concert. Despite having the same pronunciation, they have different meanings and functions within the sentence.

What are Homographs?

  • Homographs are pairs or groups of words that have the same spelling but differ in meaning, origin, or pronunciation. They often have different etymologies and may or may not be pronounced the same way.

Examples of common homographs

homographs in sentence

  • Here's an example of a sentence that contains homographs:
  • "I saw a tear in her eye as she tried to tear the paper."
  • In this sentence, the word "tear" can have two different meanings, depending on its pronunciation:
  • "I saw a tear (a drop of water) in her eye." 😢
  • "as she tried to tear (rip) the paper." 📄
  • The homograph "tear" has two distinct pronunciations and meanings, creating ambiguity in the sentence.
