• Chief architect of Project Indiana, the binary distribution of OpenSolaris designed to
lower barriers to adoption of the Solaris operating system. Project Indiana
represented the most dramatic shift in Sun’s OS strategy since the move from SunOS
to Solaris in the early 1990s, and many of its innovations (network-‐based package
management, ZFS as the default file system, etc.) are now prominent features of
Oracle Solaris 11.

• Responsible for coordinating a diverse group of Linux platform stakeholders on Linux
technology, outreach, and advocacy initiatives. Chair of the Linux Standard Base
(LSB), the Linux platform interoperability standard.

Debian
Founder and Leader (1993-‐
1996)
• Founder of Debian, one of the first Linux distributions and also one of the most
successful and influential open source projects ever launched. More than 1,000
people are currently involved in Debian development, and the formative document
of the open source movement itself (the Open Source Definition) was originally a
Debian position statement. Debian is also the basis of dozens of other products
including Ubuntu and the Linux Mint desktop distribution.
