Since
the inception of the Web, it has been seen not just as a platform for peddling pornography, or perhaps
worse, advertising, but rather as a means to bring many people together. During the Arab Spring in the Middle
East and the SOPA “blackout” in the US, people began to realize just how powerful
the Web was for bringing
people together and achieving societal changed. This panel will look at several aspects of the Web as platform
got social action including political movements, Open Government, the democratization of the Web, and the use
of the Web as a means for spreading “memes” to raise consciousness and increase awareness in society.

ABOUT MONTREAL
Montréal combines modern facilities and attractions with old world charm. Set in spectacular surroundings,
between Mount Royal and the mighty St.Lawrence River, the upbeat downtown area and the Old Montréal — and
it’s adjoining Old Port — are alive with major international
festivals and events, exquisite fine dining, high style
shopping and reputed nightlife. Montréal is without a doubt the liveliest city in Canada and one of the loveliest
on the continent. With open spaces galore, the happy mix between big city glitz and nature park settings is per-
fect for tourists who like to stay in shape while visiting.
There is this joie de vivre that permeates the city and gives it a leisurely atmosphere
that visitors absolutely
cannot resist. Rated by the AAA as North America’s gourmet capital, you can choose between some 4,900 restau-
rants, bistros and sidewalk cafés. You may want to shop in fashionable boutiques on elegant Crescent or Sher-
brooke streets or in the fascinating 30 km web of the Underground City, or decide to take in some of the major
venues
such as the fabulous Casino, the Olympic Park or history-filled Old Montréal. After all, Montréal was
named top cycling town in North America (Bicycling magazine) and the second trendiest city on the continent,
after South Beach Florida, (Shape magazine).
