Introduction
At a Glance
William Wordsworth's poetic career extended from his early adulthood in the 1790s until his death in 1850. He wrote hundreds of poems in many forms and structures, creating a liberating influence on poetry and feelings as part of the Romantic movement. This guide analyzes 14 of his best-known poems of various lengths and rhyme schemes, including some from the famous Lyrical Ballads he worked on with his friend and collaborator English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It also examines his posthumously published The Prelude, a massive 13-part epic in blank verse reflecting on his life and the development of his writing.
The earliest poems published by William Wordsworth were the collections An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches in 1793. Wordsworth had written these poems during a stay in France. Using the profits from these publications, he was able to pursue a career as a poet. In 1797, Wordsworth became friends with another poet called Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and the two formed a partnership.
Some of William Wordsworth's most famous poems were written between 1797-1798, during his partnership with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These poems were published in 1798 in a volume called Lyrical Ballads, which contained poems from Wordsworth and Coleridge. During this time Wordsworth also began writing an autobiographical poem that took 40 years for him to complete, titled The Recluse.
The poetry of William Wordsworth was heavily influenced by events in his life. For example, during periods of his life in which he was living in isolation, such as during the years 1793-1797, Wordsworth's poetry was mostly bleak and sombre, whereas times when he was close to people he cared about, such as Coleridge or his sister Dorothy, his poetry became more dramatic and affectionate, including several moving Odes. Wordsworth was heavily affected by the death of his brother John in 1805. John was the captain of a sailing vessel and had drowned at sea. After this tragedy, Wordsworth's poetry became sorrowful and restrained.
Many scholars divide Wordsworth's literary career into two sections - the young, Romantic Wordsworth, and the older, bleaker Wordsworth. He outlived many of his contemporaries, and in 1838 he received an honorary doctorate in Civil Law from the University of Durham, who described him as a 'poet of humanity'. He never finished his poem The Recluse, though he did publish the middle section of the poem, titled The Excursion.
