CHaracteristics of the Gothic novel in the modern English novel
CHaracterizes the Gothic novel-we are talking about the medieval period or places that give off an abandoned, ruined, gloomy, enchanted air, such as castles, palaces, abbeys ...
But they are not the only places. Forests, dungeons, dark streets, puzzles... In short, the author managed to create an environment that gives real fear anywhere.
Supernatural elements
Another main characteristic of Gothic literature is undoubtedly the supernatural elements, such as ghosts, undead, zombies, animals... They would be fantastic characters, yes, but always on the side of terror, meeting them is very difficult for you. dances In that case, vampires could also fit the genre.
Passionate characters
In order to better set up the stories, many authors used characters who are intelligent, beautiful, dignified ... But, deep down, they are swallowed up, lost in their passions, do not want to release themselves and throughout history with a secret that reveals their true colors as the events unfold. In addition, these characters used to have foreign and very flowery names to give them an "exotic and elegant" nuance.
In this case, almost always in novels we find a triangle: an evil nobleman who causes danger, horror and fear; innocent girl; and the hero who finally tries to save her from this fear. Yes, there is a step for both soft and advanced for love.
Situations
Time travel, stories about ancient times, the world of dreams (dreams and nightmares) and more. Some of the scenarios used in the Gothic novel, sometimes the reader can move away from his gift and thus carry a thick veil of mystery and doubt, in some cases, whether the person is really the event or not. leads to reconsideration.
If we think about the Gothic novel of the present day, we certainly do not see many similarities with what we have told you. And this is normal, because over time this genre has developed.
In fact, it began to do so as early as 1810, after the Gothic gave way to modern terrorism characterized by psychological terror. That is, it is not only the appearance of spirits or ghostly beings, but also to create fear directly in the mind of the reader, not to make the "scare" so predictable, on the contrary, it began to form in the form of turns. , situations, etc. They evoke a sense of anxiety... to the point of feeling wrapped in an aura of mystery and wonder.
Therefore, the Gothic novel itself was written in the late XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries. The stories that can be read today, although they belong to that genre, have evolved and no longer have many of the old characteristics that define this literature
