In this project for the regeneration of the 500-meter long,
15,000-square-meter Phoenix commercial street, the design
team conducted some initial field investigations and
statistical analysis, then set up an attractor system to break
the isolated and static function of the existing shops. The
existing linearity of the shopping street is thus broken to
install greater communication between stores through the
association of crowd movement and activities. A lightweight
cellular structure is created and aggregated to form a canopy
which responds to the specific conditions of programming on
the ground level. The canopy transforms a disused urban
zone, and creates a new, environment-friendly shopping
experience. By adjusting the parameters of size, height,
density, and transparency, the design team generated a
gradated sense of differentiation through the entire site.

Six years ago, Ordos was part of the majestic Gobi desert. Today, it represents
the common controversy of modern Chinese civilization: the conflict
between the people’s longstanding traditions and their dreams of the future.
MAD was commissioned in 2005 to conceive a museum to be a centerpiece
of the masterplan for a new great city. The 41,227-square-meter museum
is a mysterious abstract form capable of fostering an alternate, timeless
development of Chinese traditions and the future. The museum appears to
float over an undulating artificial sand dune, a gesture saluting the landscapes
which have now been supplanted by the streets and buildings of the new
cityscape. Local citizens meet organically in the landscapes of the museum
at the intersection of nature and urban development. The interior presents a
strong contrast to the exterior: an airy, monumental, cave-like space flushed
with natural light through skylights, linking to a canyon between the galleries
and exhibition hall.
