ACUTE TUBULAR NECROSIS (NEPHROSIS) & CRYSTAL PRECIPITATES
∙
renal tubular epithelium, especially that of proximal convoluted tubules, is metabolically very active
and thus highly susceptible to ischemia or to toxic damage;
∙
acute necrosis of tubular epithelial cells is the primary process of nephrosis; microscopic lesions are
characteristic;
∙
persistence of an intact tubular basement membrane, or lack thereof, determines whether tubular
epithelial regeneration can occur or whether repair is by fibrosis; this, in turn, influences the
prognosis for the kidney and the animal;
∙
affected animals are oliguric or anuric and die within a few days unless given appropriate therapy.
