  1. Literary Features of this Period:

To say, ordinary history of nation is it’s biography and its literature is an autobiography, which portrays the culture, general life, politics, society and other spheres of human life. In this sketch we will discuss about the history of English literature in brief.
What is history of english literature? Perhaps this question majorly puts the obvious answer. And that is it’s chronological account of works produced by various prominent writers which they printed their ingenuity upon ages they lived.
Every work the writer produced has certain intellectual ancestry. Their work had come from certain influences may be literary or eventual. With doing that the writer would impress the era that they live, through their personality and originality.
Originality is not always the case. Celebrated writer’s works breeds imitation, leading to various schools and movements. For instance, school of Pope for poetry and romantic movements based on Scott’s historical novel. Even Pope had taken inspiration from his predecessor Dryden; also this happened with Shakespeare.
For influences, I mean literary influence, for example Elizabethan era, the writers of that era taken inspiration from Greek and Latin classics and that was age of renaissance. “The tale of two cities”(1870) which was written by Charles Dickens have taken inspiration from French revolution (1789) and that was age of enlightenment.
Thus history of english literature traces its schools, movements which had been arised and disappeared. The writings produced was product of that time, culture and society.

History of English Literature

The History of English literature is very closely related to the history of the English people. It began with the emergence of the English nation and then onward kept on developing with the social development of the nation. In the history of the English, there had been several religious and political changes. Several scientific discoveries and inventions also changed the mode of life. Each of those changes reflected a change in its literature. As in the history of English people, so in the history of English literature, there were different phases of progress. Each of those phases, known as "Age" or "Period", has been given a particular name---- sometimes according to the name of the king or queen, sometimes after the name of a great writer, and sometimes according to the spirit of the time. Some of the ages have gotten more than one name because different historians have given them different names. Similarly, the duration of a particular age also differs according to the choice of the historians. Apart from these, some of the ages are subdivided into smaller ages. Though the names and time span of the ages of English literature differ from historian to historian the following list derived from M. H. Abrams is dependable:
