but still very important for the team. Famous in the UK for his "dream shot"

in the WC qualifier at Wembley which gave Norway the 1-1 tie.

ERIK MYKLAND (Midfield, Start):

Age/caps/goals: 22/25/2

Clubs: Start,Norway, Bryne,Norway, Risor,Norway
Mykland is one of the exciting young players on the team. He is very small

(<170 cm) but technically brilliant. In Norway he is called "Myggen" which

means "The Mosquito". He showed his talent at early age and has played on the

national teams for juniors and Under-21 before he made it to the real A-team.

His strengths are good dribbling skills and energetic checking of the opponents

which frequently results in winning possession. On a good day he is very

creative and can make those unexpected passes which penetrate the defence.

Unfortunately, he is quite moody and the quality of his play can be anything

from poor to excellent. Mykland is still a "non-amateur" at Start in Norway,

and would probably be one of the best buys in Europe today.

LARS BOHINEN (Midfield, Nottingham Forest(ENG)):

Age/caps/goals: 24/29/7

Clubs: Nottingham Forest,England, Lillestrom,Norway, Young Boys,Switzerland,

Valerenga,Norway

Bohinen is another young, technically gifted player. He is, in many ways similar

to Mykland, so sometimes only one of them is allowed to play. He is also quite

up-and-down. On a bad day he is so anonymous that you don't notice him at all,

but on a good day he dominates the midfield. He knows some nice "fakes" and

can carry out astonishing dribbling raids from time to time. Most famous is

his goal against Italy in a EC'92 qualifier where he rounded the whole defence

(including Baresi) before putting the ball in the net. This gave Norway a

stunning 2-1 upset win.

Group F consists of 2 strong European nations with a fierce rivalry together

with the third (and weakest) of the Africans and Saudi Arabia, widely thought

of as the the weakest nation in the tournament. So, it's a simple task for

Belgium and the Netherlands to progress, right? Well, yes, although the

Netherlands to tend to be over confident against weak nations and this could

be their undoing against Morocco.
Belgium looked to be coasting to qualification before they came up against

Wales in Cardiff where they were well beaten 2-0. After this, they looked very

nervy and finally came through with a goalless home draw against the Republic

of Czechs and Slovaks. They have an excellent World Cup pedigree in recent

years having reached the semi-final in 1986 and been unlucky second round

losers to England in 1990 having hit the post twice. This time around should

be no different and they are my choice to win the group with Enzo Scifo finally

revealing his towering talent on a World stage.

Morocco were the first African nation to reach the second phase of the World

Cup finals when, in 1986, they topped a group containing England, Poland and

Portugal but were then eliminated in a tight match against eventual finalists,

West Germany. This time around, they are not as strong and they are arguably up

against far tougher opponents than in 1986.
The Netherlands are an interesting side who are blessed with magnificent skill

in some quarters, Ruud Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp and Ronald Koeman for example,

but they suffer from having the slowest defenders playing in international

football today. This could be their eventual undoing in this year's finals.

However, they should progress easily enough from this group as only Belgium

are a real threat.

Saudi Arabia are the latest in a long line of teams from the Middle East to

launch an assault on the World Cup finals. None have set the tournament alight

and it's difficult to see Saudi Arabia being the first, although, as usual,

the players have been offered vast financial rewards as usual.

So, Belgium to take the group with the Netherlands second, Morocco third and

Saudi Arabia bringing up the rear.

History of World Cup Participation

----------------------------------

WC 1930 Uruguay

---------------

Belgium was one of the rare countries to take part in the first WC. It was

no brilliant participation: two matches lost: USA-Belgium 3-0 and

Paraguay-Belgium 1-0. The results can be explained by the long journey to

the New World, the weather, the food. Yet that WC remained as an

extraordinary souvenir for the players and the team which went to Uruguay
WC 1934 Italy

-------------

Second of his preliminary phase group (1st was Holland), Belgium went to

Italy just to play one match... against Germany and bas beaten 5-2 (1-2 for

Belgium at half time though).
WC 1938 France

--------------

Belgium did qualify together with Holland (bis repetita). This time too, we

went to the final phase just to play one match against host country France

(1-3). The lack of preparation was evident: Belgian soccer was still very

amateur.
WC 1954 Switzerland

-------------------

WC 1954 saw the first point won by the Red Devils in the WC history. This

point was the result of an extraordinary match against England which ended

after extra-time with the score of 4-4. It was quite an exhausting match and

the team was severely beaten in the 2nd match against Italy (1-4).
WC 1970 Mexico

--------------

WC 1970 saw the first win of Belgium in the first match against El Salvador

(3-0) and the fans had great hopes. But the Soviet Union was too strong for

the Red Devils (4-1). Everything was however still possible but the third

match against host Mexico ended with a Mexican victory (1-0) due to a

penalty more than generously given by the referee (Mexico could not be

eliminated too soon of course, since it was the organizing country).

WC 1982 Spain

-------------

WC 1982 was the beginning of the WC love story for Belgium. In the EC 1980

in Italy, Belgium had been a surprising vice-champion. So the team went to

Spain with a much self-confidence. Belgium had the difficult honour to open

the WC in the 1st match against Cup holder Argentina. This match is still

recalled in Belgium as one of the most extraordinary ones in the history of

the national team. We all remember the superb goal of Erwin Vandenbergh

after a brilliant cross of Franky Vercauteren. A difficult victory over El

Salvador (1-0) was not enough: Belgium had to take a point against Hungary,

who had a better goal difference, to go to the next round. It was a

difficult match but the draw was achieved (1-1), thanks to a goal from

Czeniatynski (who could be playing in WC 94!). The second round, with Poland

and the Soviet Union, was a catastrophe for Belgium (Poland-Belgium 3-0, 3

goals from Boniek; and SU-Belgium 1-0).
WC 1986 Mexico

--------------

The qualification phase was very special. Belgium had to play two matches

against Holland to be allowed to go to Mexico. The qualification was won at

the very end of the second game by a goal from defender Georges Grun.

The first round began badly for Belgium who was defeated by Mexico in the

first match. The second match was not convincing: a difficult victory over

Iraq! Fortunately we managed to qualify in the match against Paraguay. This

began a series of extraordinary matches. The one against USSR was surely

the most extraordinary match in the Red Devils' history, 4-3 after extra-time,

although USSR had taken the lead twice. There were less goals in the next

match against Spain but it was still a very tough match and we did qualify

on penalties winning the right to meet Argentina in the semifinals; perhaps in

normal conditions we could have done something but after two very exhausting

matches it was too difficult. The match for the 3rd place against France was

lost 2-4, and so we ended 4th.

WC 1990 Italy

-------------

After an easy victory over South Korea (2-0), the Red Devils had a very tough

match against Uruguay who were a very hard team; the victory was very difficult

to achieve and had to be played with many injuries in the defence. Three of the

four defenders could not play the match against Spain which was lost by 2 goals

to 1, but second round qualification was assured. The match against England was

a great game. Belgium were the better team and the Englishmen were expecting

a penalty-shootout, accepting Belgium's undisputed domination. Unfortunately,

at the very end of the match there was a stupid free quick, a moment of

distraction in the defence and Platt's goal sent the Red Devils home.

Football in Morocco can be traced back to the introduction of the sport into

the region by French colonists. Some clubs, such as Wydadof Casablanca (WAC)

became centres for anti-colonial sentiment. The US Meknes club, now defunct,

had a great nationalist tradition, while in the north, Tangier and Larrache

were notable for their opposition to Spanish occupation. On the other hand,

Morocco provided some great players for French football. The most notable of

these was Larbl Ben Barek, "la perle noir" (black pearl). He was born in

Casablanca in 1917, was capped 17 times by France, playing for Olympique de

Marseille, Stade Francais and Atletico Madrid. After his retirement, he moved

back to his homeland. One tribute to his ability came from Pele, who visited

the country and whose first request was to meet the old master.
The Moroccan League is composed of 20 first division teams, which play the

championship over 15 weeks. There is also a 56-club second division, which is

subdivided into four regional groups. The second division season is played over

13 weeks, where the teams play for the cup of the throne, patronised by King

Hassan.

On the international front, Morocco was the first African country to play in

the World Cup finals in 1970. It fared well in its first tournament, scaring

the West Germans by scoring first, and then scoring its first World Cup point

by drawing with Bulgaria, 1-1. The Moroccan international side was back in the

World Cup 16 years later, in Mexico in 1986. It played extremely well,

finishing at the top of its group, ahead of England, Poland and Portugal.

Morocco went out in the next game losing 1-0 to West Germany in a closely

contested match.
The glory of the 1986 World Cup has not been repeated since. Morocco lost

the 1988 African Cup of Nations as organiser, and two years later was

eliminated again by Mali in Marrakesh. The training and coaching from 1988 has

gone through several changes to reach its present state. The Brazilian, Valente

took over from his compatriot Farla, who made his mark in Mexico in 1986,

before handing it over again to Italian-Argentinian, Angelino Angelillo.

Former coach, German Olk Werner was recruited after the 1990 World Cup in Italy

before being replaced by Abdellah Blinda most recently.

Realistic Hopes for USA '94

---------------------------

USA '94 is the third World Cup finals for both Morocco and Cameroon but, as

with their fellow African qualifier, this year's Moroccan team looks a pale

imitation of the past. There is plenty of incentive for the players to do well

though as King Hassan II has promised them each a car and a house if they

surpass the achievement of the 1986 team and reach the quarterfinals. The team

can have no complaints about its Group F opponents in the States. The seeded

team is Belgium -- the weakest seed apart from the host, Saudi Arabia is no

world power and only The Netherlands look a class apart. However, the second

round looks an unlikely target for a team in disarray. Coach Abdellah Blinda

took over from the fired Adbel Khalid El Louzani just a month before that vital

last qualifier in Casablanca and immediately looked to his European-based

players to add some spark to the squad. This has caused some friction in the

camp as few of the newcomers played in the qualifiers. Many of them don't speak

Arabic -- three were even born overseas -- but they add experience and

discipline to the sometimes wayward natural talents of the home-based players.

The fulcrum of the squad is midfielder Rachid Daoudi, who plays for Wydad

Casablanca. He has five goals from his 23 international appearances and loves

to get forward. He has a terrific long-range shot and is dangerous from free-

kicks. He is complemented by newcomer Mustappha Hajji, who plays for Nancy in

France. The 23-year-old has only played four times but has had rave reviews,

particularly after his debut in the Zambia match. He was offered the chance to

play for France but opted for Morocco. "I chose the country of my origin", he

said, "and believe me, after my first match against Zambia I don't think I'll

regret the choice".

In defense the key is Noureddine Nybet, who also plays in France, for Nantes.

He is determined and organized and can play in midfield if needed. The other

key defenders, Lahcen Abrami, Ahmed Mashabi and Adbelkrim El Hadrioui don't

inspire confidence and even the Saudis will fancy their chances.

Up front things look a bit thin. Abdel Laghressi, who scored the winner against

Zambia, doesn't appear to feature in Blinda's first- choice lineup, leaving

Hassen Nader to shoulder the responsibility. However, the 28-year-old, who

can't stop scoring for Farense in Portugal has only managed six in 32

internationals and doesn't really look comfortable against international

defenders. Mohamed Chaouch, another French import from Nice, has a similar

strike-rate (11 from 52 games) and will be in contention for a place.
However, as with Cameroon, this team looks unlikely to cause too many shocks

and it looks like Nigeria will lead the way for the African continent this

time around.
